I'm in Bangkok for 5 months doing musicological research and just did a remote recording (1 hour north of the city) of a solo singer in her home. I am using a Sure BG 4.0 mic through a motu828 II into a macbook pro running DP 5. I record at 24 bit/44.1 so my levels were not set that hot. The mic was placed close and the recording sounded ok, but... I still got a few plosives making the signal jump and a couple of clips. Any advice on mic placement and/or should I use a limiter while recording? I have ozone 3 as far as limiting goes. I am interested in documenting this unique type of singing so I do not want to over-process the recording. Thanks for your help. - rhizomeman |

Most obvious advice would be a windshield or pop shield. They have lots of "B" ´s don´t they? You could also point the mic down to her mouth from her foreheads level in some 45 deg angle Matti |

If you're getting clipping, then you're probably not running the signal as "cold" as you think you are. Record less hot and/or move the mic back. Put a sock on the mic if you really need to...

Cool - thanks for the advice guys. "They have lots of "B" ´s don´t they?" Actually, in Thai the "b" and "p" are often conflated into a single sound - "bp" which I can barely hear let alone pronounce. However, she was singing in the "Tai Dam" language. Tai Dam are a distinct ethnic group with their own music, language, and culture living in Thailand, but originally from what is now northern Vietnam. The plosives were mostly on (what sounded like) "ph". |
