Well that's what I thought also when I opened the package.

Because I was expecting a little different design such like my friend Onno has which is more a tri-pod design however I am very please the way it looks as it is very discrete when recording a live classical concert for which I had it bought.

The only thing I am little worried about is it's max length approx. 3meters.

Anyway I am still waiting for my DPA SMK 4060 to come and then we will hit the road.

That base looks mighty small for the amount of perpendicular spread.
It looks like it may easily fall with wind or mild bump.

It looks really sweet.

It stays up quite nicely. I did not have one drop and i use the same thing for a year now.

It is so light it still is "down heavy" Gaston did you order the longer microdot cables also?
I found it is a drag to use regular XLR's on this stand so i have 5M microdot cables before i adapt to XLR.

If height is an issue you can use a regular stand to make it higher.

Before recording remind.

1. Keep all the cables near the stand. and tape them! (nichiban, nichiban!!!!)
2. Put a bit of tape around the microdot connectors of the mics because when they touch each other you have a ground loop with lots of hum.
3. If you're preamp requires earth, use it

Hi Boy,

Thanks for all these very usefull tips.
But I have not ordered an additional lenght of cable yet but will do so.

My mic-pre-amp is an Painpot Crookwood and earthing will be used as long there is earthing from the power socket supplied, which mostly is when recording in concert halls.

Look forward to receive the DPA4060 SMK kit and start experimenting, I hope the XLR adaptors will sound fine however if not you told me it is "easy" to modify?

Is there a plan how to modify?

Maybe I give you a call later if that's fine with you?

Regards,

Gaston

Dpa mma 6000

Just would like to know if any of you used the DPA MMA 6000 mic pre-amp and how does it sound, is it any good for example for classical recordings???

Hi Gaston you may call me no problem. But mail me or pm me for phone details.
And for the adapters there are three capacitors that give coloration. The best combination depends on the preamp after it but there are some brands of caps that sound better than in the stock adapter.

I use the MMA6000 all the time and think it is not of lesser quality then my 4063 that are great.

P.S. Photos of the way I mount them (bought everything in a kite- etc. store cheaply)

I use the same technique with my redneck rig. Gaffers tape is sooooo useful.

But that's not tape, just a plastic tube with a bigger diameter then the carbon fibre rod! So, there is no need to clean the glue afterwards cause there's none

How"s the weather down in Astoria?

I was actually thinking of getting more of these 406x, they are great!

Btw. You can also use a drinking straw instead of a small tube. But the tube would be better because it's partially made put of rubber (not only plastic) so it holds better

I will have to find very narrow tubing as I am using a carbon fiber rod about the diameter of the lead in a wooden pencil to carry the mics. There is a way, hab kein Angst. The DPA 406n's are wonderful. I have had good luck with them. And you can put them in your vest pocket and still have room for that gold watch.

But wouldn"t a small diameter rod be more prone to vibrations?

I do not know how carbon fiber responds to sound. I understand it is more damped than metal. I am not even sure I could hear it. Maybe others can help on this. The plastic tubing or gaffers tape could dampen that, perhaps?

Maybe as well as leaving about 1" of MicroDot cable to give the element some suspension? I don't know that I've heard stand kicks (or maybe the stand just hasn't been kicked in a recording session). If I use a rod, it's a (former) carbon fiber internal support for a photo softbox. It's about 1/8" diameter, rigid (though it flexes under a load) and is usually suspended from a SabraSom elastic suspension, or E-taped at the top of a 11' stand in wide spaced (flanker) use.

Either way, people often ask if I've forgotten to put up a mic (or mics) on top of that big stand...
