Talking preamp for direct flamenco guitar

I have a cordoba flamenco with the fishman preamp which I run into the DI of my API A2D. It's a bit pingy and forward sounding, which I know is part of the DI sound. This is necessary for my situation; can't really mic it up with decent results.

What's a good preamp/DI box for fishman type preamps? Something a little softer/slower in the transients than the API.

thanks

Acoustic guitar DI is one of the things I feel EH12AY7 tube mic pre is really good at. Smooths some of those piezo "quacks" and softens peaks really well, focuses the sound so it doesn't take up so much of the canvass.

Too bad you can't mic it, Cordoba makes a nice flamenco guitar.

Chandler TG2 mic preamp and DI

....sounds, pardon the ubiquitous cliche, sweet, on all guitars: acoustic steel and nylon, clean and distorted electric. Regarding the acoustics, either DI of mic'd they are sounding really fine.

Millenia Media STT-1

Outstanding as an acoustic guitar DI; the Twin Topology signal path will give you options for days. However, it ain't exactly cheap... You might look at the MM TD-1 as a less expensive alternative.

My $0.02

Not sure what your budget is, but you might want to consider the Empirical Labs Lil Freq. Its got a really good DI on it but its also a great EQ for getting rid of nasty high mid stuff in a clean and natural way.

Diggin' up this old thread again....needs have changed!

Something for $200 or less used, basically a good DI box. Don't need gain really as there's enough with the fishman. Everyone says tubes. A good one that's relatively hiss free for $200?

FWIW, I once turned up to a gig with a plug-in classical, and the sound guy plugged me into an old Whirlwind (it didn't have a model name, just the word "Whirlwind" in big type, so I guess it was the 1980's original) DI. Best sound I ever got out of that guitar. Full bass, sweet trebles (i.e. no plasticky piezo snap). This might be the ticket for you.

Be aware that this was for live sound. This DI might be too noisy to use in a studio (I have always used microphones to record this guitar).

Cheers and good luck finding a good DI. I am interested in hearing about your findings in this area.

Best,
++aldo

I don't have a nylon string guitar but for my piezo equipped steelstrings and mandolins I like the Radial JDV (exzellent headroom and super versatile!), Countyman Type 85 or a Demeter tube DI.

A little reverb can help a lot for "softening" (I like the spring reverb in my Schertler Unico amp).
