That's some mighty expensive additional foam!
I own a pair of ultraphones and can assure you the build quality is very good. I'm sure the Remote Audios are good as well, but they don't appear to me to be $65 better.

BTW, no extra money is needed for the syborg- you just have to learn to speak a foreign language! (German for instance)

It's not just the foam. Here's a picture of my two year old phones. The frame is a real avaitor frame not a gun muff frame.

Another vote for the Beyer DT770-pro. I just picked up a pair from G.C. Very natural sounding and exceptional isolation! My reference cans are senn HD600. However, they are open and I can only use them when outside the hall. Oh, and did I mention both are extremely comfortable .
I tried almost all the offerings in the $100 range and they all had me convinced I was wasting money. I still use the 240 DF for a check sometimes.

I'd love to see if anyone has some input on this matter as well. I own an older model of the Beyer DT 770Pro which is rated at 600 Ohms and the newer models are rated at 250 or 80 Ohms. I wonder if there is any noticeable sound characteristic difference.

There are some good reviews of this pair of headphones on the Audio Review website.

We have an older pair of 770's at the studio, but I have not had a chance to compare. I'm sure there are sacrifices having a lower impedance (80 as oposed to 600). But I can monitor directly from an HHB CD recorder at a healthy level.

I agree with reviews. A bit bass heavy. But the highs are fairly detailed. The stereo image was not as detailed as I had hoped. I always listen for the bows hitting the string when placing mics during an orchestra recording. I also use my old Sony V6's for a quick check of the (quite hyped) highs. All cans color, I just want the whole story, even if I have to use 2 or 3 on the job!

I have a pair of Sennheiser HD650 with a Zu Mobius cable and an Audio Valve RKV MK2 Tube headphone amp. I take that whole rig when I record classical music from a truck. HDNet shoots a couple of concerts a year at UNT. We typically use DPA 4006 in a Decca Tree about eight feet over and six feet behind the conductor. Spot mics are typically Sennheiser MKH40 and Schoeps CMC64 and Schoeps CMC64s in the hall for surrounds.

The Sennheiser HD650s sound incredible; better than the hall. They are compleatly open , so not good if you don't have isolation. I let the conductor hear a playback after the concert through the headphone rig and he couldn't believe it. Too bad people never hear it like that for the broadcast.

My guess would be that the 600ohm verision might sound the best, but you will need lots of power behind them. I would recommend a Ray Samuels Emmeline XP-7 headphone amp. These are portable, battery powerable, not terribly expensive and sound sweet. I had one a few years ago that pushed a pair of HD600s with ease.
