Mics for Classical Guitar and Violin

I record both classical guitar and guitar and violin together and need some mics that would serve both situations if possible. I already have a pair of Peluso SDC's cardiod and omni caps. My budget is $2500.

Sennheiser MKH 40 or Schoeps CMC5 or 6 with cardioid capsule.
May be Neumann KM100 with 40 (cardioid) capsule if the others are too expensive...

I absolutely love the Schoeps M222's for this sort of thing.
NOS Telefunken AC701's--what could be better?

Yeah..I'd agree for Acoustic. I'm not sure about on Violin though..never used them there.

The AKG 451's sound good on acoustic also.

I used a matched pair of Josepson C42s the other day on a live to 2 track venture...one on a classical guitar, the other on upright bass...

Both instruments sounded absolutely stunning IMO....

Thanks for the input guys. Has anyone tried the AKG 460B with the transformerless mod for this application. I read here where Jim Williams likes this mic. Maybe he can comment. Thanks.

Harold, can you please comment on how you like the Peluso SDC? I just got a pair and I am liking them alot.

Also, have you thought of trying out a ribbon mic? I've been recording classical flute with the AEA R84, and it is Great on flute. It's amazing how natural and smooth in sounds on the instrument. Maybe a pair of the R84s for detail and the Pelusos for room sound would make a great combination.

Neumann KM64 or KM264 are really wonderful on strings and would be great on a classical guitar as well.

I've only had them for a couple of days, but so far they are very nice and smooth. I've only tried them on my classical guitar though.

Ollie, Now your talking, John Michael Talbott just got a matched pair of these 264's from Bill Bradley and brought them into my studio. He played his classical guitar through them & knocked me out. I believe they fall right around that $2500 range also. These things would undoubtedly be great on violin as well.

AKG C 480 B with CK 61 is transformerless version of classic 460B. I've got couple of them and they excel on all kind of acoustic instruments especially acc guitars. Very smooth highs, not like C451B or Neumann KM184.

Other than that I'll second Shoeps, Sennheiser and DPA!

Km264's

Shuffle,
You are absolutely correct. 64's and 264's are very natural and wonderfully detailed mic. Gorgeous on lots of items. Violin, Cello(Super Yummy), steel string, nylon: they are the bomb.

John Michael Talbott : there is a name I have not heard in years. A fine acoustic player that I believe played in Mason/Prophet at one time. Great playing style on stell string.
