so has anyone used the Klark Teknik Square 1 dynamics yet? these things have been out for awhile now but its still hard to find people that have used them or any reviews beyond the usual basic comments. I can get a fairly good price on one so im wondering if i should just buy it and have 8ch of comp/gating or maybe order a dbx 1066 for a quarter of the price. |

we've got a couple of the units at work. we like them as workhorse units. they sound great, not the best comps youve ever heard, but certainly dont get scoffed at, but having them in a production rack works brilliantly when touring engineers want a combination of comps or gates and we dont necessarily know whats coming up, especially at festivals. its an easy way to instantly be 8 comps up. or 16 with two of them. |

thanks alot, any chance you have compared them with anything else particularly a 160 as talking of standard touring/festival comps

Would love to hear more opinions on them as workhorse units (and maybe any comments on the likeness/differences to the usual DBX stuff)? Garry |

i ended up getting one shortly after starting this thread. it has been a great unit as its so versatile it has a place at every gig and guest engineers never reject using a klark even when its not what they have spec'ed its probably still a long way from the DN range but for what you get for the price its a great piece anyway. its probably one of the best value piece i own as well. mine usually sits next to a 160 (or 2) and while the klark cant do the 160 sound, its certainly in the same range so as you can imagine its better than any of the lower end dbx units. Then there are kings that the klark will do better than a 160 like brass or acoustic guitars (when you need to compress them) the ability to switch to a peak sensing comp gives you so many more options. if your looking to buy it for the comps you also get frequency concise gates thrown in as well. to me having some quality games makes a world of difference as well, most cheap gates i end up pulling out or just not using to start with but the klark gates are of the level that can improve a sound. I prefer a 160 on bass di and lead vox for most rock acts, but the klark comes close enough and for the size and weight difference you can save your back as well. personally ive been finding a nice small 4U rack with the klark and a 160 give the perfect balance and gives all the dynamics options you need for a smaller to mid size show. you have to find what works for you but after years of trying to find a balance between cost and quality in dynamics im very happy with the klark being a big part of it. |
