It ain't cheap, but the AEA SMP17 is the top of the line when it comes to stereo bars; it even has ORTF markings engraved on the bar.

It ain't cheap, but they don't get any better than this. I've used mine with everything from little KM184s to big heavy 4038s. And its a lot more versatile than a typical stereo bar; you can even mount it vertically.

And it is part of a larger system that can grow into a Decca tree with other optional parts.

ORTF stereo bar

Jules,

Try this:

http://www.micsupply.com/standaccessories.htm

See "Swivel T-bar" about halfway down the page.

$22

It's not snazzy, but it's solid.

Pretty much all those bars are RIDICULOUSLY expensive. The DPA one is £295, for example. If you need the bar for ORTF alone, K&M make one for about £12 and it's excellent. I got mine from Digital Village, but I know Canford Audio stock them, too.

Jules,

The vark bar at Posthorn.com. Cheap and it has an extension on one side so the mics can go over each other. With other bars, it's almost impossible to ge the caps at 17cm!

I like the extension on the vark bar, so that the mics can xover. I use some mic clip thread adapters linked together to do the same job with mine.

another studiospares
here

i got that one. the 4 knobed mounts have US thread adaptors over the EU threads (best of both worlds. the bar itself is 36cm with 30, (2) 17, 22 and (2) 11 cm possibilities by varying where and how many mics you put on it. i like it for the reasond that its drilled at fixed intervals and not sliding ones.

Here's the stereo bar kit I got with my matched pair of Microtech Gefell M300's. Supplied with a transparency overlay with all the correct angles and measurements on it so setting up for ORTF is a breeze.

I don't know if they sell it separately (and MG spares are notoriously expensive) but it's an extremely well engineered piece of kit - miles better than several cheaper stereo bars I've owned.

As other slutz have pointed out you need a sort of spacer (visible on one mic clip below) in order to raise one mic's height and thus be able to get the capsules to really overlap correctly for XY and ORTF. As a point of interest what is this little widget called - can we start a naming contest?

The advantage with the more expensive ones like the schoeps and the dpa's is that you can fix their angles and be 100% sure about it. Angle accuracy IS important I believe .... for ORTF I think the mics are angled @ 110 degrees. correct me if I'm wrong.

Jules,

in the quest for ultimate gearsluttiness get the AKG bar. AKG buy in the K&M bars and rebrand them with their own logo.

they cost about 2.5 times as much as the K&M but they sound SOO much better!
