Exclamation location back up multi tracks

gidday

Just wondering how you guys who are doing location work with digital desks are running back up multitracks? We are working with dm2000s and mx2424s connected via TDIF but I cant find a box on the net that will split TDIF to 2 multitracks. Anyone know of anything? At the moment we are having to record 1 to 1 machine digitaly and to the back up analog via the insert sends which is less than ideal.

Thanks

GK

Hey, I found this on the Tascam DM-24 forum, shows the wiring to make TDIF Y-splits. I’ve been thinking about making up some, as I'm running my backups off the insert sends as well.

I must admit that I'm not sure which is the best way to go. Splitting analog just after the mic pres offers a greater redundancy, but less flexibility for insert patching. Unless you split out the inserts to a patchbay as separate ins and outs and normal the outs to the backup unit's inputs.

not sure if this will work with the tascams but i dont see why it would not. ive done this with adats and DA and had good results. first your wiring would be signal-dm24-mx2424(1)-mx2424(2) back to dm24 to monitor. the key here is to use an outside clock source for word clock (i like the big ben) and then not to use the sync between the two mx24's and the dm24, so if one stops the other won't. i've never used a mx2424 like this, so iam not sure if the first mx2424 will send signal out with the tracks armed for record. but if it dose this is a great work around. try it and then let me jnow if it works iam curious.

This Y cord is to be able to split ins and outs on one tdif connector !
(tdif = 8ch IO, both ways, the Y cable is to connect separate AD and DA convertors to the one tdif port)

It is not to split 8 outs to 2x8 outs.

Don't even try it.

Hey Steve,

I haven't made the tdif splits, I've decided to make the split in analog, just ordered the extra patch bays.

Yannick - These cables could be used to breakout the tdif connector to separate ins and outs, but you would not need the bridging wire that runs between the 2nd and 3rd tdif device. These cables are to mult the outputs to two devices in series and then return the signal to the original source. It would be a challenge to make a 25 pin with the outs split in parallel and have an input as well. Tight fit! This way you also ensure that you have the right impedance load, not sure about a parallel split.

The1Hub's routing works for adats because lightpipes have separate ins and outs not so with tdif.

Hi,
if I understand your question correctly, why split?
just get more cards and send paralell signals out of your DM2000 to 2 MX2424s?.
this is how Ive done my last 4 locations dates.

2 DM2000s, each with 24chs of TDIF and 24chs of AES
So im sending 48 chs to radar via the TDIF and 48 chs to PT via the AES.
Both recorders are being fed post fade, post eq, post dynaminc.
So I have the show in two different places, on two different formats.
As well as a third back up in the TV truck on the VTRs.

hope that helps

Sean
