Question Portabrace = Concerned about the "stolen on the subway" syndrome?

Do you guys use portabrace or pelican gear to haul around a city (when w/o a car)?

I'm wondering if anybody in NYC (or Boston, Chicago, DC) moves the gear around via subway. What do you use?

My first instinct is to get a roller bag (or one of those grocery carts) and tape a bunch of plastic bags to it, so I look homeless, and it doesn't invite people to steal my crap.

Pelican is a little more subtle. But I think it's still says steal me on it.

Has anybody had luck with specific luggage brands? Rolling bags? Camping internal frame backpacks? Convertible backpacks/rollerbags?

My set up would be 2 quicklok mic stands, 2 pair mics, recorders, possibly one or two rack mount units. Generally speaking, more than I want to have on my back the whole time.

I don't know if those grocery carts would hold a bunch of really heavy stuff without breaking. Still, I do like the idea of mocking it up so you look homeless. Make sure you talk to yourself too.

OK... I'm gonna go get on the Redline and start rolling homeless people in case they have pro audio gear in their carts.

get one of these and get some foam to cushion your stuff. you could even cut plywood, foam them and create layers. in fact, make one layer at the top with a bunch of beer cans and newpaper glued to it so even if anyone opens it they wont see any gear! if you keep it a few feet from you while play, no one will even pay it any mind. then break down your gear, wait until there's not a lot of people around, load it up quick and go.

The Petrol PLS-4 looks more like a regular suitcase with cordura fabric & internal hard shell case, its lighter than a comparable size pelican case & features large scooter type wheels. It comes in three different sizes...

On a side note... I used to live in México City & carrying anything larger than a potato sack is a target for thieves... so if you really want to be (on time) at your remote recording session, you might consider hiring a radio taxi/shuttle service...

When I move equipment I carry a police tactical baton.

The first blow is given to the knees, then the second to the temple.

Since I've carried it, there has been no trouble.

I get them from a supply house in Idaho.

great little things they are. you can slide them down into tubular frame things, etc.

cool little thing you can do with some of them is unthread the little ball at the end and screw a hex head bolt straight in (might be an M10).

small cattle prod would be pretty fun too.

i would certainly carry something though.

Geezus this thread scares the hell out of me. I'm glad I don't have to worry about stuff like this on a daily basis (in general) where I live...

erich - I like the trashcan idea. You should install a good lid latch to keep people from accidently dropping trash into your can.

I think a large plastic suitcase with wheels would be the way to go. Get a used suitcase that's beatup, and folks will think that it's just a bunch of old clothes.

I don't think it matters what case you use. Don't let it out of your hands whether it's in a nice case or a cheap case, right?

I keep one of my ultra-portable rigs in a cooler.

When I move gear on the street, I just carry Plush with me.

I carry pepper spray in general - but if it's between my life and my gear, and more than a few guys, I'll ditch the gear. That's what insurance is for! Or, let's wait and see if NYC has to revise its license to carry laws.

I like the cooler idea. Trash can is way cool. Cut breathing holes and arm holes and I could just wheel around the entire city inside of it.

How about a hotdog stand with shotgun mics hidden in hotdog buns? Decca tree in the umbrella...

For the record, this thread definitely confirms that gearslutz is full of PSYCHOS!

We stopped carrying guns when it became a "class X" felony with mandatory jail time here. Before that, we always packed. Walther PPK AND an UZI between the car seat.

Totally true and we always "avoided" a "problem" or a "situation."

MUCH better when felonies have "optional" jail time.

i have a knife made by western and it has a big 666 stamped into the little lateral piece. has silver all over it. long as hell and sharp as a new razor found it in the woods during a nervous breakdown. blade is that old carbon steel, smooth as silk. dated it to late 60's/early 70s.

love it but i dont carry that particular knife cause some fag cop might like it and want to give it to his son or something.

otherwise its straight razors and boot knives.

Cool

Violence....

There's no need for violence.

Just place your stuff in a plan (non-electronic or of value branded) cardboard box and be done with it.

String it up with a nice handle and you're good to go...

or consider knifing anyone that even looks at your gear in that special way.

As a part-time fur trader I often use a Wood's brand Duluth bag to carry my furs and Hudson Bay blankets. Obviously you can go down market and get some heavy duty duffle bags. If you're interested in deceiving the thieves you might try a giant Gatorade type insulated water container (as used in American football games), filled with valuable equipment, (not water). I used to put my priceless but now worthless camera equipment in these.

A friend of mine used to put his valuables into black trash bags while on vacation, one day he came back home after the maid decided to put all that junk away & the trash truck was waaaay gone...
