Steve... Great story! I love that kinda "meant to be" story. all things happen in their time eh?
I'll definitely look you up for a tour when I get to NY (which may be soon)

Keep the pics coming as things shape up. I'm having a ball following this thread.

btw, if you want a copy of my Le Mobile tour, let me know and I'll burn you one.

She hasn't yet,
I'll sneak a picture in with the rest of my rig
Sounds like my kind of place
Pictures are coming soon
this is a lot of fun
I actually know someone here that works in the civil service and has 56 tube traps of varying sizes in his living room and makes strange audio cables

Craig,

I've been very fortunate with situations like that all of my life. And I don't take it for granted. Yes indeed, all things do happen in their time.

Yeah, tell me when you're in town and stuff -- it'll be a blast you see ya.

As you already know, I wasn't into posting unfinished work but, I'm really enjoying it now. You folks have made it much easier for me to handle.

I PM'd you... check your messages.

-----------------------------------------------------

7rojo7,

I'm glad she hasn't. I almost have 56 Tube Traps of varying sizes. I believe it's more than 48 of those suckers.

Dude, toke easy man...

The Jon D'Uva (not John Duva) Daire and I know has been known to play guitar once and a while but, he's no guitar teacher. He's a recording engineer/mixer with ProTools tendencies.

You can see Jon in one of the expando control cabin shots above. D'Uva's in the bottom left corner of the picture. That's why Daire did the shout out to Jon in the first place.

One more thing, I know allmusic.com had Jon and John mixed up a while back -- I believe that stuff is now all worked out.

You can now exhale...

Enjoy!

When applicable, you'll be able to park the vehicle for maximum visual connection to your subjects. Or maybe point the rear of the truck towards an ocean or other lovely view. When you want the privacy, curtains can be drawn.
I just tripped out on that one & imagined a janitor waxing the 'hall' of it!

Steve,
If your ever feeling "the squeeze"...like your gonna loose it....just go out and buy ONE of something. You'll be fine after that. Sometimes you just gotta let loose, you know.

"One" of something? You don't know me that well.

I usually never buy "one of something." It's usually in pairs my man -- I buy in pairs.

For us, backups are key in the location recording biz...

Well, it's really three of everything but, I hate odd numbers.

Let me explain. You start off with the main device, and then you clearly need a backup to that device and a backup to the backup.

So, let's round it off to four units since it rolls off the tongue much better than three.

Man, if only those pics could be like that movie The Ring...

I'd love for that gear to just come out of my computer screen into my living room...

Even if I died in 7 days, it might still be worth it.

Here's a thread link to more Eloy pictures -- The Power Within Elroy.

This thread shows you an inside look at Elroy's AC & DC power systems. I go into (somewhat) detailed explaination on the systems.

If you're considering a mobile build out project I encourage you to check it out.

Everything in Elroy and The Bread Mobile is interchangable.

Thumbs up ...And then there was Teak.

Elroy has been my back-burner project for way too long.
It seems like I needed to buy and build Cosmo, my latest truck build-out to get Elroy on the fast track to completion.

The goal is to finish these two trucks (in 2009) ASAP.
I have a different carpenter working on each truck, to minimize the jam ups.

Even though Elroy is so close to completion, I bet Cosmo will be completed first, but you never know.

Oh, one more thing; the Teak counter tops are in as a dry run.
They still have a bit more mill work to be done to them.
Each counter top will have an extension leaf for more work space when necessary.
The driver side counter top has the leaf attached.
Here are a few images for your review.

Looks good Steve!

Then again, if you put too much gear in there, you may loose the mobile studio space.

Well, that is an option.

I can also see just my small Studer desk, the recorders and a wrap around couch in there too... Plenty of space to vibe out.

I cannot wait to finish this rig so I can place all my analog gear in there for some photos.

freakin awesome steve!!!!!!!!!!! you guys have come a long way. can you tell us about those angled racks and what happens to them when you collapse the truck body? i remember you telling me that the room was very flat but you had a bass node or two to deal with. have you figured out how to handle this problem?

Well, thank you much!

Ah yes, those angled racks...
Nothing happens to them when the truck body contracts.
They stay in place, but the structure just below them collapses hydraulically.

The mobile studio space is very flat with a couple bass nodes to be addressed.
We played around with sound clouds and additional traps which improved the problem.
Once we finish the Teak wood work, we shall concentrate on this matter.

I will post more pictures as we progress further.

Man, I haven't heard the name Chilton in a really long time.
Chilton desks sound awesome.

That was a Neve 8301 (extended) Kelso desk...

Remember, this truck can handle all sorts of set-ups.
If applicable, we can manage three 48 channel consoles without a sweat.

...Or, no console at all - We've recorded 4 to 7 piece bands in that space; done vocal, horn, percussion and string overdubs too.

The analog desks operate from the right side panels and patch bays.
Digital desks will interface to panels on the left side of the mobile unit.

Well, I walked into the field shop today and noticed that Elroy is coming along nicely.
A lot more stuff has been done. We got some more Teak and we started woodwork for the outriggers. The desks have been installed, but need some finish work.

Man, we are seriously close to finishing this project.
Just a few more things to do and we shall be operational.
The rest of the work will be done while we're in operation.

If you're interested, checkout the photos below.
If you have any questions, shoot them out to me.

Yeah, yeah, yeah, whatever...

Little by little the dual expando is near completion...

Check out this photo my buddy Sean and I took.

I stitched three picture to get this wide look.
I admit that it's not the best stitching job, but I trust you folks will get the idea.

Now, remember, this mobile unit can be turned into any sort of mobile production vehicle. It can be a studio, a control room, a Green room, whatever you want can be accomplished within reason.

The "overhead bin" rack space is great. Creative and efficient.

But what do you have on the ceiling? Most everything else seems to be acoustically treated in some way.

Looks fantastic Steve! So what are the overall dimensions?

Is that how the floor will fold up for transport?

Nathan,

The ceiling rack system hides the hydraulic hoses, audio, video and power cables.
Eventually, they will be stuffed with shallow equipment, DC lighting and monitoring devices.
The panels not in use shall be treated with closed cell foam and rigid fiberglass.

I purchased 21' RGB LED strips that will be mounted below the ceiling racks.
We also plan to add a soft treatment on the outrigger framing just below the ceiling racks.
The LED RGB lights will be diffused by a smoked Plexiglas.

The ceiling has a rubberized paint covering; we plan to mount acoustical clouds in a few places.

Believe it or not, the room is ruler flat acoustically, with just a couple of nodes that we plan to design and install tuned traps to handle those frequencies.

I'm waiting until we install the split-air ductless heat pumps before we address the tuned bass traps and ceiling clouds.

Thanks Daire,

I cannot wait until you step into the room.
The picture only does some justice.

The overall dimensions of the collapsed box is 27' long 8' wide.
Roughly 22.5' of the 27' box expands to about 14' wide.

The floor does indeed fold up for transport.
The console (when needed) shall ride on one of the outrigger (slide-out) sides.
This floor design keeps the room isolated from outside noise better than any dual expando I've been in.

Steve, that looks amazing! You've made a ton of progress in the last several months. Please tell us your plans on the back door. Also, I assume you will use stairs of some sort. Is there enough room inside to store them with the walls closed? I'm proud to have a tiny part in the building of this awesome truck. Can't wait to see it parked at a gig!
