Does anyone recall ZZ Top's superbowl halftime "performance" some years ago...including such travesties as a lip-synced version of Tush where Billy Gibbons didn't even have a slide in his hand...oh the horror. What were they thinking?

Brian,

Let me be clear that the only "trashing" I personally intended was towards the Superbowl performance. As both a football fan and a music professional, the Superbowl halftime "show" is a phenomenon I abhor as a concept. To me the notion that on top of this, it was a lipsynch/air-guitar movement-and-posture show only made it a little "worse" in my mind.

As to the Chronicle article, I agree with you at some level. I find that music-journalists who rant and attack like that are, at best, presenting a caricature of a valid criticism to appeal to readers. I didn't intend the link to be a blanket-endorsement of the author's attitude or his conclusions. I thought it was funny when I read it this morning, but on re-read, it does seem a bit over the top.

However, on some intuitive level it seems like Shania Twain's music is contrived to appeal on a commercial level, rather than simply (purely?) created to satisfy an urge to make music. I don't think this is necessarily a bad thing, but it is a different creative process. The article however, goes too far in turning its criticism of manufactured/simulated performance and commercialism and into a derision of the person.

Anyway, I don't mean to write a book about this, but I do appreciate your standing up for your colleagues, and I agree to a degree with what you're saying.

And I vote for an end to all music-esque Superbowl halftime performances, Shania Twain, or not.
