| I just ordered an Audio Technica ATM350 for use in live performances. If anyone has any tips or tricks on how they have set one up on an F5 Mandolin (mine is a 1993 Gilchrist) I would be very intereted. Thanks!! |

| Run it into some headphones and then move the mic around to see where you get the "perfect" sound. I've never used that mic, but it looks pretty cool. I've always mic'ed mandolins with an SDC on a stand. Many musicians have pickups, which allows them to move around the stage. Having a real mic mounted on the mandolin should give you a great sound. Best wishes finding the sweet spot. |

| I use a Countryman Isomax II on my 1908 Gibson F4. What I did was hot-glue a rare earth magnet to the gooseneck for the mic and another on the underside of the pick guard. Once I've snapped the mic on, the gooseneck curves up and points back at the soundhole (oval sound hole rather than f-holes) a couple inches off the top. It stays out of the way of both hands quite nicely. The rare earth magnets hold very firmly. I mostly do this because I swap the mic between instruments, but it's worked very well. Never moves.

| Thanks for the responses...I islolated a picture of Chris Thile and he just uses velcro to attach the gooseneck to his tail piece, with the business end of the mic nestled at the bottom of the F hole. This looks like a good set up which I will try once it arrives...still waiting for mine to be delivered. Punch Brothers use this mic on all their instuments...mando, guitar, banjo, fiddle, bass...and augment their stage sound with some Neumann's. Of course they use a killer sound man as well and I think they are all wireless setups. |

| This is true. I saw them in Seattle a while ago. This in combination with the centre stage Neumann LDC for solo boosts and vocals led to a pretty excellent sounding show. They weren't wireless that night, but maybe other times are.

| Yes, the ATM350 is a phenomenal mic. I've used it on fiddles, cello, acoustic bass, accordions, and it should work very well on mandolin too. In terms of positioning, either do as suggested using headphones to find the best spot, or move the mic around whilst your sound man listens for the best position. Beware the f-hole placement, which can induce feedback. Cheers Bob |
