mounting / transporting external PSUs?

OK, maybe this is a sign that I’m getting too much gear, but a quick look at the Aura Sonic website convinces me otherwise.

I’ve got my location gear divided into 4 sections:

One 4RU rack for the Genex recorder

One 4RU rack for AC power (UPS, power distr., Littlights)

One 4RU rack for my new mixer: API 7800 + API 8200 + Dorrough meters

And a pile of small racks filled with various mic preamps

This all works pretty well, until recent events just increased the number of external power supplies I need to carry around. I'm curious how other location guys handle the mounting and transportation of external PSUs? (not concerned about little wall-wart units, I'm talking about big, bulky, heavy PSUs that are not rack mounted.)

Do you somehow mount them on the rack enclosure that houses the associated gear, or do you carry a box of loose PSUs to the gig and then just connect them after you have the rack enclosures in place and opened up?

When I only needed 1 or 2 external PSUs on location, I didn't really worry about it. But now that I need several of them for my typical remote setup, my big fear is that I'll get to the gig and realize that I'm missing a PSU. This has me thinking of ways to permanently mount the supplies in the same enclosure with the related peice of gear, but I haven't figured out how.

How do you guys handle all of your external PSUs?

Steve,

You can never have enough gear.

When I had my four Daking mic pre/EQs in a 4U SKB case, I found that I could mount the PS inside the rear case cover. The PS mounts very nicely. Four bolts, nuts and large washers did the trick.

My custom 24 channel API 3124 has an external PS. When on portable dates, we carry it in a completely formed out SKB mic case.

We have also mounted smaller PSs in the rear of our rack enclosures. The racks are deep enough to handle the equipment and supplies nicely.

Your idea of permanently mounting the supplies in the same enclosure is spot on!
