Question Portable Setup

Hi all,
I'm thinking about assembling a portable chain. Personal use, mono or stereo tracking only. I'm thinking Apogee Duet for the interface, but unsure of the preamps/chain. How portable would a 4 or 8 slot Lunchbox be? I have a 6 RU Skb, which i could fill as an alternative. Gets heavy fast.

Cheers,
zot

Heres a thought if your only doing mono or stereo

RNC really nice pre to a EMU 0404 USB to a laptop

cheap even the laptop isnt bad on ebay
Look for a IBM thinkpad r51 will do the job nicely $225 to $350
RNC about $400 i think used
EMU 0404 USB about $179-199 New

I have a Audioupgrade pre instead of the RNC
But for your price range and portablity that would be good choice
Super quiet chain lots of input output options
which makes monitoring easy and portable
I even use small computer speakers in the field and headphones
Either way the EMU 0404 USB is the cheapest and best sounding in its range period for interface with any laptop if your going stereo at the most in the field

Thanks !

I'm already good on the laptop. I've got a new Macbook Pro which I already use in the *studio* . I just sold my RNP. I have an 6176 and a VT2, neither lend themselves to portability. I guess I'm looking in the .7-1K range for each channel of pre. Looking for something nice that won't be a back breaker! I'll proly be tracking electric guitar & acoustic.

Cheers,
zot

Contact Jim williams From Audio Upgrades and order his pre dual channel
about $1500, neutral as can be super clean 3 dimensional sound and nothing added but gain It blows away most anything out there for sonic purity. Id say look on Ebay but not often one of these come up
I have three of his Preamps 6 Channels of sonic bliss
Hook it in the EMU 0404 usb and your set
Like i said Laptop was optional depending what you already had
Jim's Pre is super light as well one rack space the EMU isnt rackable but its light weight and its converters are so nice for the price $199 or less if cant be beat
My setup fits in two computer bags one is older style which they use to make huge so I have Speakers Headphones all my cables in there
I love my combo its like having my Studio on the road with me

I'd start with the duet and see how you like the preamps. They're not bad at all and have lots of very clean gain. Bus powered, very portable, rugged etc... i can record for about 2 hours on battery power with a newish Macbook pro.
