Steve, I wished I'd had Elroy for the last live record I recorded! What a nice truck!

Wow, what perfect mic selection for location recording. Cool beans.

Being inside Elroy is even cooler than looking at it. The patchbay size and layout = most impressive thing I've ever seen. Steve is a madman.

Hey, you guys have got it all wrong, less is more!

For the kind of chorus/orchestra/piano stuff I do mostly, I seldom set up more than six or eight mics, and they'd be pairs of:

Earthworks QTC-30's
M-Audio Sputnik's
Groove Tubes GT-55's
Avant CK 1's or a CK-40
CAD 7000's
MXL V57M's

and even the lowly GXL 2200 has a place here and there.

I hope this gives a renewed sense of vigor to the humblest amongst us.

You are not alone!

Well, Joel, you own more mics than me. I've got:
Oktava MC-012 (matched pair)
AKG C414 (matched pair)
SM-57
EV 664

The two dynamics rarely get used on remote gigs.

ha - sold my schoeps cmc64s, sold my DPA 4006s, sold my DPA 4011s, sold my AKG C$60s and C480s, sold my km184s, sold my royer r-121s, sold my coles 4038s. the only mics i currently have are:

2x - KM140
2x - DPA 4061

so far i havent run into anything i couldnt do with those 4 mics - but, all i do these days is small ensemble chamber stuff. it is quite liberating to have such a small kit these days :-) of course, i cant stop jonesing for a pair of tlm170s and maybe some schoeps cmc62s or km131s. oh well...

Unhappy

You're right Ben...

I cannot believe my mic & DI inventory is under 400 mics.
I guess I'm really not a true Gearslut and that's a crying shame.

Actually - although I have a reasonable mic. list - it's not often that I use more than two at once.

Quality, not quantity!! Here's mine:

2 x Schoeps CMC6-MK2S
2 x Schoeps CMC6-MK21
2 x Gefell M300
2 x Sennheiser MKH8020

Wish list: matched pair of condenser fig8s ... maybe Sennheiser is working on those for the new MKH line? Me hopes!

Same here - they are definitely on the "to do" list for the MKH 8000 series.

I am pressing Sennheiser to get them out as soon as they can.

I have access to my studio mics including 4 km84s, 2 Schoeps, 2 Royers etc. that are used on a "as needed" basis and the mics that are permanently assigned to remote use are 5 Shure SM81's and 3 Sennheiser E935. I only do small remotes that require 6-10 mics at most, several choir projects each year, piano remotes and acoustic music concerts for folk/roots musicians.

Thumbs up The Awesome World of Multiples

Wow, 20 DPA 4060s - simply awesome!
Freakin' 50 Sennheiser MKH416s - over the top!
What only 4 Sennheiser 816s? No, they are great (true) shotgun mics.
I wiish I had a pair of those mics.

40 Neumann KM40s - I love the fact that you have multiple mics in play.

Do you like the Sennheiser MD431MKIIs? I have the originals and like them a lot.
The MD421 and MD421 MKII sound different to me with the original sounding much better. Is the MD431 MKII equal in sound quality to the original MD431?

Man, 25 Sennheiser 5000 series radio handhelds and beltpacks.
You ARE da mon, man!

MS mostly (I have been using and MKH 30/40 for this until now).

But I would also like to try my hand as MSM (double MS) with the MKH 800 TWIN.

Welll, I think other outside broadcast companies have similar inventories,
but I'm happy to have this stuff available of course!
I hear no difference between the original and MKII to be frank..
We use em as interview mics and I like em for that purpose, I've never used them for anything else, what have you used them for?
In the eighties I saw em used (well, on tv, I was still in high school back then
for vocals a lot..

Thumbs up MD431s --still kicking after all these years.

It's interesting that you don't hear no difference between the original and MKII.
...And, that is a good thing, but...
I hear a difference in the new and old MD421s that makes it impossible for me to use a MKI and a MKII together as a pair or set.

Believe it or not, I like MD431s for snare and still use them for vocals when it's applicable. I've used them for horns and percussion with good results, but the majority of the time they are on vocals or used as the occasional snare mic.

I hear no difference between the original and MKII to be frank..
We use em as interview mics and I like em for that purpose, I've never used them for anything else, what have you used them for?
In the eighties I saw em used (well, on tv, I was still in high school back then
for vocals a lot..

I am just a year into this and have picked up:

Schoeps CMC64 (2)
Schoeps CMC68 (1)
DPA 4006TL (2)
Peluso CEMC6's (2) + hyper-cardioid caps (2)
Rode NT1-A (1)

The first five are my basic kit. I currently like running the Schoeps MS flanked by the DPA's in a Williams omni array. It is compact and is a nice setup. I also am getting back to experimenting with the Schoeps MSM (Double MS) array.

This is a hobby. And while it is more expensive than blow it is way more fun, and lasts a lot longer. I value this board for the advice offerred, the honest knowledge base built from experience and collegiality of the folks here. Thanks to all of you I am starting to turn out respectable recordings.
