Here we go, couldn't resist

Sortof a crappy image, but playing with mics is fun. Sort of something out of Star Wars. From top to bottom, left to right:
Thuresson CM402, BeyerDynamic MC930, 402, 402, MC930, 402
DPA 4015-TL x3
DPA 4011-TL x4
DPA 4006-TL x3
APEs

Too geeky?

Plus, a load of SM58s, 57s, 86s, BG81s, Beta87As, Beta58s, Audix D6s, i5, AKG D112, C419s, Sennheiser 835s, 845s, ME2s, and Countryman E6s (RF systems) for PA work.
Only recent changes are a pair of Neumann TLM193... sweet mics... and gone are the Gefell M270s. More omnis than I needed... Not enough cards. Just about the only thing I'd like to add is a Royer SF12... and, of course, a Brauner VM 1-S. But that will need to wait until the house is paid off. Or there's a rich uncle out there of whom I have no knowledge.

Plenty of mics around here. None are stock, all are heavily modified. The AKG's have no transformers. All have super low noise jfets and bipolar transistors fitted to lower the self noise. All are fitted with either Rel-Cap polystyrene's or MIT MultiCaps to "let the air out".

The Milab's self noise was dropped about 7 db each. The Neumann bottle mics have new caps and resistors. The Josephsons are completely rebuilt insides.

As much as I love that stuff, sometimes it's not such a great idea to take them out everywhere. Rates or the enviroment may not justify bringing some of them. I don't like bashing drummers working over my recording mics with their sticks. Nor do I want a screaming nut to spit into my condenser diaphrams. Add to that dancing guitarists that knock everything over.

For those crews, I use cheaper stuff. I have a dozen MCA-SP-1 mics I bought for $39 each. They are flat from 20 hz to 7k, then a small 3 db lift to 20k hz. Modified with a 5~6 db self noise, they are silent. They take 130 db so I use them on snare drums, amp cab's and anywhere else I need quality sound at low risk. At 1/2 the price of an SM57, I have no fears.

What do you use the SCX25 on? Would you describe them as rather bright?

There are a number of mics I rarely use, but I don't like to sell microphones. Might do so with the KM 184, though. And if/when I get that pair of digital Beyers, I'll trade the one I already have for a second MKH40.

D.
I bought quit good second hand/demo mics myself (DPA) and never had any issues so far.

A true gear slut!

Besides having the diversity in your collection, why the need for so many, steve? Multiple rigs out at one time?

That's pretty much it.
Also, you may need multiples of the same mic on the same date.

I picked up the m160s a few years ago at your suggestion. Great as drum OH in the studio or remote. Isolation is superb. A colleague taught me they are also good on trombone and as spot mics for strings on chamber ensembles.

The m88 is mostly used for jazz bass drum... but I've also tried it on acoustic bass when I am recording a band that also needs PA. Great on kick, but only alright on bass.

All very useful, not much i would be keen on moving on in a hurry.
Would like another 414 or two, though the reason i've only got one is I had access to a friend's XLII before recently moving interstate.
Still plenty on my yet to acquire list.

I recently bought a new bass. My M88 was ok on my old bass, but I preferred other mics (like my DPA 4099). With my new bass, I went through every mic I had and the M88 was the clear winner.

I totally agree with you... it's truly dependent on the instrument and the player. You have to match the tone with the mic (or vice versa?).

I'm using an M88 on Christian McBride's upright bass this week in a live performance setting with great results.

This time around I only have two bass inputs.
The M88 and Christian's AMT clip on mic.
This combination sounds fabulous.

I'm really digging the M88 on stand-up bass.

It bends well with that AMT clip on mic.

Christian McBride is the man. His albums are some of the most played, according to my itunes metrics. I can dig it.
