Guys, the nickynicknick dude may be an ass, but he's right. For metal in small rooms anything other than a close mic'd drum would be useless. I don't even think doubling up on the toms with one mic would work. I have done hundreds, if not thousands of "metal bands in small rooms", hell, I did five earlier tonight.

Kick, Snare, and whatever Toms you can cover is usually my vote. If you aren't tracking it, you really don't need overheads in a small room IMO. What i would do if i was limited by inputs on my FOH board is get a cheap 4 channel mixer (dare i say, a behringer ) so i could cover a drummer with 4 toms, and not have to do any of that micing in between drums stuff. You can just send a stereo output from that into 2 channels and then plug the Kick and Snare into the other 2. This can also be a good way to save a couple compressors too. theres my 2 cents.

1 Kick 2 Snare 3 Toms on a "Y" 4 Steve's Remoteny (Omni pointed in the direction of the drummers kick knee) Thanks for that one Steve. I love that mic placement. I used it again yesterday and everyone thought it was the the bomb. Fine tune it and you could do the kit with that mic only. |

Thanks! The interesting thing about the Remoteny mic placement was that I started using it when I was doing live sound for a band that had a lot of musicians and singers and usually only had one or two inputs for the drums. If I had two inputs the second mic would be for the hi-hat... Funny thing is now-a-days I don't usually use a hi-hat mic.

Be very careful what you say nickynicknicknickynicknicknickynicknick! I've very serious about what I said in regard to the way you treat the folks on this forum. Despite how you come off to the folks here, I believe you have a lot of good things to say and contribute to the forum. |

took your advice guys re not underpowering the speakers and ordered the T.AMP TA2400 1200w per channel rms at 4 ohms. Should drive the bins and tops nicely with tons of headoom.
