| Hi GS, I know there's probably tons of threads about this, but the search contents are very general: channel, live, recording, portable... So, the reason I ask is I'm looking to get a portable rig I can use to record random samples. I'd like something smaller the better, like something I could fit easily into a backpack with easy I/O to my powerbook. I'm thinking I'd need the following: - shotgun mic - digital recorder (with good clarity! Not one of the cheap hand-helds, 1/8 tape sounds better) - preamp - limiter of some kind to handle transients. something like Apogee or Klark Teknik quality would do. Just something to prevent clipping. Any recommendations? Thanks for any suggestions! ![]()

| Depending on budget, I would look at the Sound Devices 722 Matt |

That looks dope, but out of my current budget range unfortunately. Way cool though. All-in-one solution minus the mic.

| You can also hope for a 702. They are cheaper and the odd used one shows up. I think one is being offered at the taperssection.com yardsale for ~USD1600. That could be a good buy and an elegant solution. It is not mine. I do not know the seller.

| First choice - Nagra LB with MKH 60. Second choice (if money is tight) - Tascam HD-P2 or Fostex FR-2LE with MKH 60 or MKH 416. MKH mics are RF condensers and work well even under damp conditions. If money is really tight, consider the K 6 + ME 66 - although this is a pre-polarised condenser, wildlife recordists continually tell me it works very well in damp conditions. Headphones - the HD 25-1 Mk.II are closed back and *very* efficient and work extremely well with battery portable equipment. I hope this helps.
