Thread Starter | Rack gear and holes match up
I recently had two big boxes delivered: One with a 12 space Gator shock-mount portable rack, and the other with a bunch of pricey rackmount do-dads. Of course I feverishly unwrapped my presents to myself and set about installing the do-dads in the rack. I found that the holes on the rack ears seldom matched up properly with the holes on the rack itself. For example, the MOTU 896 is a 2 space unit. When one puts screws through the upper ear holes and through the holes in the rack, the bottom holes of the 896's ears don't come even close to lining up with any holes on the rack. As a result, my 896 is secured only by the top holes. The same thing happened with my old 1u Aphex 207 pre. I could only secure it by the top holes. Is this normal?

Look at your rack- usually the holes aren't spaced evenly. Move one set of holes down and try it again. You may find that it fits that way... --Ben |

Move the holes down... BC bud... Ooooohkaaaay. Uh, the holes are in these metal things. It's like they aren't separate things themselves, but rather holes in the things. Maybe if I tried the BC bud idea it would make more sense to me... |

Oh, wait a minute. You mean, move the do-dad down, not move the holes down. Ok, I'll see if that works. BC bud. Sheesh. |

One rack space is 1.75" and has three spaced holes. If you started from the top or bottom of your rack you should not have any problems mounting your gear with four 10-32 screws. If you cannot use more then two screws always use the bottom two screw holes. Your gear will be protected best this way... Pllease put down the son!

When mounting stuff in racks it can move up and down a little..... Lossen the screws on a piece of gear...and see that you can move it around a little...... If every piece was screwed in at it's "highest" point..then after a few pieces of gear things will start to not line up....... if that makes sense.

lay the rack on its back, get everything spaced properly (holes lined up for every doodad) and screw it firmly. then stand it up and smack it. tell it to make you some cash. treat it badly until it does.

| Access Virus TI Rack - the holes don't line up (holes incorrect) I've got the Access Virus TI desktop that I opened and swapped around so I could rack mount it. The rack ears they include are strange (the holes are incorrect). the holes don't line up... is these a European standard perhaps. I'm not really happy about it. take a peak. You can see that I've got two rack screws in place but the other two don't line up. This is one of those... move the rack nut C clamp type of rack unit... she just doesn't line up anywhere. The distance between the holes on that rack ear is 5 inches on center. The standard rack space is 1.75 inches. Now if I was moving this rack around... I don't think I'd be happy with my (nearly) $2,000 synth... kinda hanging on my two bottom screws. Have a look at these photos: ![]() Here, I have the rack ear placed flush up against a rack unit above... so the holes should like up with some of the pre-drilled rack holes in the standard rack rail. ...and lastly with the top hole (somewhat) lined up... where the hell am I suppose to screw in the bottom? ![]() Am I wrong? Am I missing something? Cheers Steve sorry... this is a repost or cross post from here... WTB - Access Virus C rack ears |
