Talking Saturday...

...I'm doing my first two mic documentation of a live concert. It's a wind band with a singer soloist on a few numbers.

Setup is this:

Two Schoeps omnis on a tall stand, cables to mic pres with a split from the vocal mic to a third line. Cables from the mic pre to converter => digital mixer => three channels from mixer to digi002r and Powerbook + spdif out from mixer to CDburner backup.

Questions:

1. I need a good place to start when it comes to mic positioning. How high up, how close to the orchestra, how far between mics and how to angle them. I'm not looking for a finished answer just some tips on where to begin.

2. In PTLE, my plan is to have lots of tracks and just arm the three needed for that particular song and then arm another two/three for the next song. Is this a good idea or should I try to open a new seesion for each new number.

3. Any other good tips?

Thanks

1. Well, it really depends on the space and how everyone is arranged in that space. Without knowing anything, I'd say try about 6'-10' behind the conductor, and about 6'-10' above the conductor. When I use 2 omnis I generally use my Jecklin disk, so they end up only about 6" apart. That also depends on how everyone is arranged, but try 6' apart or so (??).

2. I just let PT run the entire show, then split it all up later when I get to mixing it. I've never had a problem - I've always used an external hard drive.

3. If you can, record a rehearsal of the performance in that space - you'll have a much better chance at getting your mic positioning right.

Good luck!
