Thread Starter | 8MX2 vs True Precision8
Howdy, I'm looking for some additional pre's in rack form and I'm looking around at my options. I'd like to hear from folks that have used either the ATI/AudioToys 8MX2 or the True Precision8 pre's... I'd *really* like to hear from folks that have used both!!! Aside from the extra mix/features of the 8MX2, I'm wondering how the actual pre's in the 8MX2 compare with the Precision8's (or any other pre's, come to think of it). I record acoustic/traditional music (not much classical, but plenty of jazz/blues/folk/bluegrass/country). Any opinions/advice appreciated. thanks, -dave |

OK, I give up....... who makes the 8MX2? I'm guessing that it's an 8ch preamp with built-in 8x2 mixer, but who offers this thing? Am I the only guy who isn't familiar with this model?

Dave, I love the ATI brand! Their pre amps sound really good to my ears. I have a bunch of Pro6 channel strips... There are the same circuitry as their Paragon consoles. I have not tested the mic pres in the 8MX2, but I understand they are the same as the Pro6. In my opinion, the ATI pres have a much more full body sound then the P8s. You will not go wrong with the ATI stuff. Their pres sound good on just about any type of microphone. I cannot say that about the P8s. Steve, You should consider checking them out. I think you will like them a lot.

i have not tried the ati brand stuff however, i tracked a blues album w/ the p8 alongside an mp2nv and manley dual mono pre. needless to say the great river and manley are better more spacious pres , but the p8 held it's own quite nicely. the m/s feature is great too. good luck. |

I've not used either one personally, but here's a Precision 8 review that you might find useful > http://www.prorec.com/prorec/article...256D6000173EF3 Spacey |

Yes, the P8s hold their own quite nicely indeed. We have 56 channels of them... And only 9 Pro6s. I'm looking for another 39. ATI hasn't manufactured them in a while. I heard they may build more Pro6s, but... As they say, "Variety is the spice of life." I want 48 of everything. |

Steve, What type of mics do you feel suffer with the Precision8 ??? Having never used an ATI anything, I have no reference point to compare their pre's to. Does anything other than another ATI box come to mind? ATI keeps talking about their "padless high-voltage preamps"....call me a Girlie-Man if you like, but it seems like having pads on-location is good security... Is there something about these pre's that makes a pad less necessary? Why they give you a phase button but not a *&#$*(^* pad... It'd be great to hear from some folks that have used the 8mx2 extensively. Also, several people have previously commented on the 8mx2's limiters, saying they were not so swell. Has anybody used these things extensively enough to know how they behave/misbehave? thanks, -dave Steve Remote wrote: Quote:

Preamps with pads generally have fixed gain followed by an attenuator (variable resistor). A pad is required at the input to prevent clipping as the output level approaches the power supply voltage. Adjustable amplifier gain and higer voltage supplies elimnates any need for a pad, and provide better performance. Some units which have a switch labled pad, are actually a 10 or 20 db gain adjustment switch not a real pad. This method provides better ein performance, than a real pad. A couple of years ago we did a mic pre shoot out at the ASL field shop. Check out the thread here...The Big Shoot Out at the Audio Chorale |

Steve, Thanks for the pointer to the ASL mic & mic-pre shoot-out... Very informative, for certain. It still makes me want to try out several of these units for my own shoot-out... I'd like to compare the Daking with the ATI. I'd also like to hear how the ATI sounds with all sorts of acoustic stringed instruments. I think I'm just gonna have to get one to test drive... thanks, -dave |
