Hello Mr. Ted, Actually, since the sound is made by the ensemble and only transduced and amplified by the mic amp, I think any good mic amp will do. We tend to shy away from any mic amp with a bright sound, however. Make sure your mic amp can deliver the required current on the phantom power. Trust but verify with a current tester. That said, we use (in no particular order) EAR 624, Crookwood Paintpot or the BG#1. I also like the Amek "Rupert" DMA. |

Did you get the BG1? I'd be really interested in your impressions. It might be time for another preamp soon and both the Gordon and the BG1 are on my radar. | |

Well, I didn't follow this thread when it first came up, but I will add that the first thing I got rid of when I picked up a Sytek was my Grace 101- and I don't like to get rid of stuff. The casing is a little cooler looking than some other stuff, but I couldn't help but think that it was made redundant by the normal channels on the Sytek. Interested in what is up with the B.G.

I like the Grace 201 I regularly borrow but was looking at the BG and Sytek as a permanent fix. I too am curious of the results of any shootout. Chris

I got 2 units of BG1 a month ago. First i tried them with mandolin (gibson a-, 1915) with r84 and tlm103. Very smooth (as said by many others). Very nice highs, also with 103, no top end sizzle. Works fine with r84 as well. Bg1 has 59db gain. That´s been enough for use with r84 in every close miking situation i´ve come across since i got them. Of course these are very easy to setup for stereo, having 3db steps. I like the basic design too, not too eye-catching, keeps me concentrated on music. |

GET BOTH. the Bg1 has done some workload, the pre has a similar vibe like a stellavox pre i had access to in the past, smooth and unfatiguing. If the Eq sounds just as good,i might buy it as well. the gordon is just gordon, like rolls royce. thanks plush
