Thread Starter | schoeps...close micing too???
hey, I'm looking into picking up a pair of Schoeps with the MK4 caps for live recording of classical, jazz, acoustic ethnic music, etc. In other words, for all the stuff where these mics typically shine. I was wondering how they do with the cardioid capsules for close micing on guitar(classical and steelstring), other plucked instruments(lute, sitar), strings, etc. Any thoughts? Thanks~! |

funny thing, used them for exactly that the other day ... classical ad steel string guitar. The guitars were recorded in a living room with a digi 002 (hedd AD and buzz stereo pre). We did a pretty close mic setup on the guitar with the schoeps .. MK4 cardio capsule ... about 17,5 inches away from the players hand and take from the top .. not straight in front of the instrument. The result was a very present and full sounding guitar sound, very natural .... of course due to the close position you automatically add little artifacts ... players breath for example ... but that's what we were after so ... perfect in this case. For the same recorded a concert Harp ... this one with a schoeps ortf stereo couple ... but also with the mk4 cardio capsules on it. similar micing ... pretty close to the instrument.

By a coincidence , yesterday I too tried very close miking with Schoeps. When recording a huge "monochord" (more than 4 ft long) I put MK4V very close to resonating sound holes and a pair of MK2 wide apart above the body. The combination sounded excellent and rich, much better than either pair separately. I aready did similar things once with didjeridoo (one distant , one very close pair) and also with classical guitar

i had a pair of cmc64s for a while, and found them to be excellent in the diffuse field, but rather boomy on many sources in the near field. for close micing, i think the mk41 capsules are a better choice. the DPA 4011s are an excellent choice also, and seem a little better balanced for use in both near and diffuse field applications.

Thanks for the responses. I have heard similar things about the dpa typically excelling in near field situations a bit more than the Schoeps. I think I just need to figure out a way to get both of them in my hands to compare. I'm recording a lot of tradfitional Persian intruments these days, and there aren't a lot of people on these boards with specific experience with these instruments.

ISedlacek, What city are you located in? I've been in the states for a year now after having spent 3 years studying at the Vienna conservatory. I wonder if I made it out in your direction during that time? Omid |
