What mics do you use and where you put them?

...All sorts of mics depending on the venue and sound level. Spot shotguns, cardioids, and omnis all work well. I like placing spot shotguns downstage pointing towards the audience. I like placing cardioids and/or omnis at the mix position. Mic placement really depends on the venue and speaker placement. I'm sure you'll be getting a few more observations from our forum member to consider.

Obviously condenser mics. If the venue is big, I like to place "delay lines", i.e mics on stage (shotguns or cardiods), mics at the FOH position, mics at the very end of the venue... | |

for small venues, i like using a pair on either side of the stage facing the crowd and a pair at FOH. large venues, three mics panned spatially across the front sound great along with an FOH pair. depending on where FOH is, a pair in ORTF facing backwards from the mix position can sound great and fill in the venue's overall tone. |

I like shotguns at the edges of the stage facing the crowd in a small to medium sized club environment (which is 99% of the work I do). I've used a number of different ones for this in the past - right now I'm quite pleased with a pair of AT 815b for this. All they have to do is pick up crowd noise, and they seem to do this pretty well.
