Question Headphones?

Aloha,

Which headphones are you using for mixing and recording? Why?

Which are the most comfortable?

Thanks,
alohachris

I like my Ultrasone 650's.

I'm used to them.....for that reason they translate well to various other mediums.

There are so many..........

Alot of people use Sony 7506 headphones. They're about a 100 bucks and durable but they are overly hyped on the high end. I don't recommend them.

I've found Grado headphones to be quite nice - even their less expensive models.
They sound quite accurate, I think, but they're open backed and so not ideal for tracking or when you have backround noise and need some isolation. They're comfortable only because they are light.

My current favorites are Audio Technica M-50s. They sound pretty darned good and are comfortable on my head although the material used (some kind of leatherette stuff) does not breath too well so my ears get hot in a 1/2 hour or so.

I've had a pair of AKG 271s which I thought were pretty good but one of my sons needed some and I gave them to him. I sometimes wished I hadn't though.

I've never found the perfect set yet - there are always trade-offs it seems. Also, you just can't depend on headphones for critical mixing. There's something that happens when sound hits the air that headphones simply cannot duplicate.

Good luck.

Do a search....

....and you'll find enough reading for *many* hours.

That said - I recently got some Sennheiser 650s and I love 'em...

Yeah, click on the "headphones" tag just below the last post in this thread to get to a long list of threads about headphones and such!

The "similar threads" list at the bottom of this thread also can help you with more information.

Thanks guys!

Aloha,

Those are some great recommendations and links. I do appreciate them.

I've owned almost all of those over the years, but none lasts for long in Hawaii's humidity. Been using a Radio Shack open eared pair that's not as bad as you'd think.

Just upgraded to a Pendulum Audio SPS-1 preamp and want to hear the full sonic range of that amazing machine, so I'm upgrading.

How bout AKG 240s'? Realistic, comfortable, durable?

I love Sennheiser 600's but don't want to amp them and they are fragile.

Thanks folks!

I've owned 240s for years and yes, they're super-comfortable. Wearable for hours. Compared to the Senn 650s they're very bass heavy, and not nearly as focused in the mids and highs, but if you get to know their sound they're good. I wouldn't call them fragile, but they're not exactly bricks, either - I've actually been impressed with the 650s that way; they seem quite robust, and very comfortable, although I haven't had long-term experience.
