Any tips on Madison Square Garden remote recording?

Yo peeps,

I'm not a live/remote guy by trade, but I'm about to do 2 nights at Madison Square Garden. Remote recording for posting in 5.1, but also a live stereo output for realtime local broadcast. It's a large setup with +/- 70 stage inputs. Choir, band, pre-recorded media playback, lions, tigers and bears, Oh My!

Anyway, I'm hearing that we will have a 1000+ feet run to the truck from the stage. Anybody have any tips for me at MSG? Remote mic pre rentals in NY? Any sage advice from veterans at that venue?

Thanks a bunch for any insight. I'll owe you one.

Brian,

Excellent news my man.

I had good experiences at MSG, especially when we parked inside the venue...

There’s a vehicle height restriction at MSG. You’ll have to address the 1000’ cable run (to the stage) if the truck you’re using is over 12’ or so. I forget the exact height limit. You’ll need to clear inside parking even if you’re 12’ or under, but it’s worth a shot.

We have parked 75' to 150’ away from the stage. It made life really simple for us. Power is available from a number of places. We have pulled power from a pillar no more then 25’ away from where we parked.

Sounds like a lot of fun. 72 channels (give or take) is kind of the normal nowadays. The last 4 remotes we were on had at least 56 channels coming from stage and that didn't include any return lines or additional feeds to/from other areas. We usually provide a 72-channel rig when more then 56 inputs is necessary. It keeps it simple multipin wise. For us, it's a lot easier to add an additional 24-channel rig plus you get the extra backup channels and you don't have to break up a standardized system.

Good luck on the gig. Keep us posted if you need any additional support.
