Recently been enjoying 'Mulligan meets Monk' on riverside..
I don't post much on here, mostly cuz I'm just trying to a) learn stuff and b) save up some dough to enter into the recording side of things. But this one I had to answer. Serenity and Anniversary are incredible performances by Getz, w/ Kenny Barron, Rufus Reid, and Victor Lewis. 2 CD's worth of material, recorded at Cafe Montmartre in a total of 4 live sets, as I recall. One of them won a Grammy. And the 2-CD set w/ just Kenny Barron, People Time, also at Montmartre. Getz' last recording, he died only a few months after it was made.

As a saxophonist, I have many heroes, but Getz is still #1 for me. And I'm not even a tenor player!

E.S.T. - Tuesday Wonderland
e.s.t. is amazing! viaticum is an incredible album, sonically and musically.
and yes, avatar is pretty fantastic, as far as jazz goes, hahaha. my roommate, Dan McCarthy just recorded an album there- his band is called Tucksy. bass, drums, banjo and vibraphone! really catchy stuff; really swingin jazz.

some other jazz albums that i love, both sonically and musically...

all the Thad Jones/Mel Lewis Orchestra albums from the late 60s/early 70s, especially Consummation. it sounds huge and killer and modern; the music is funky and tasty swinging at the same time, like Basie plus funk. the orchestration is wonderful, too- all those sax solis with soprano or flute on top. not to mention the players! the album Potpourri has a 17-year-old (or so) Jon Faddis, killing the lead part like he was born to do.

Brian Blade Fellowship. I don't know this stuff too well, but my roommate has showed me some of it. absolutely incredible sound, and amazing music.

just lurking through the location recording forums, and i'm aware that this thread is pretty olde - nevertheless:
- Kenny Dorham "Afro-Cuban" from 1955!!!! Killer sound! Rudy strikes again
- almost anything on the "Creative World" label - Big Band sound recorded so "powerful" and direct, though not too clean - I have no idea how they've done it...

Branford's "Crazy People Music" is super smokin', as well.

+1

I also really like 'The Dark Keys'...

Very dry but very pleasing at the same time.

I like the engineering from everything these groups have done:
Horace Silver, Art Blakey & the Jazz Messengers, Dirty Dozen Brass Band, Tortoise and the Bad Plus.

I've been listening to an album called "Study in Brown" (Clifford Brown & Max Roach) lately. Just really rock-solid, simple recording. None of the elements stand out TOO much, but there's nice contrast between the instruments and even the parts that are played even in the same song/tune/jam/arrangement.

Not really jazz, but I really dig the sounds of Galactic's records. Perfectly fat, round, and non-intrusive! Very nice! Stanton Moore's album called "III" is AMAZING. Just him playing drums and some mics. Simple.

Best jazz recordings

This is an obviously an old thread, but I can't find a single mention of some of the greatest jazz recordings ever, like Thelonious Monk, Monk's Dream (or any of the Macero Monk records) and Duke Ellington, Blues In Orbit (both at 30th St). How about some of Tom Dowd's Atlantic recordings at the Atlantic offices?

Anytime I hear a great old jazz recording and say to myself, "man, that sounds incredible!!", almost invariably it's something recorded at the 30th St Studio, something by Rudy Van Gelder, or something by Tom Dowd.

I am a fan of Errol Garner. His old "Concert By the Sea" recorded in Carmel, CA, in 1955 (Concert by the Sea - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia) never fails to move me immensely. As the link says, the recording is not the best, but the performance is just pure magic. Outside in a beautiful venue with an attentive, polite and enthusiastic audience; yes, it used to be that way. For me it is a time machine: I put CBTS on and I am back in the mid-50's. It is just a great album by a great but neglected musician.

Autumn Leaves from the concert: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rH_GF4nw3JI

Cheers

+1 on this — especially the pianos sound awful. But most 'old school' players are insisting on that kind of piano sound still.

I love the deep vox on that one.
My favorite is J.C's favorite things the intro is so evil and the swing on the horn just moves

Im a bit surprised that no one has mentioned The Bad Plus... Its new, and not traditional, in the sense of the word... but the record "Suspicious Activity" is one of my favorite recordings ever.

Yes tragic accident, meeting a bus on an icy road .

He has a very melodic playing style, I never get tired of his music.
