Thread Starter | We're looking for a 24 track Playback system for live gigs, where we can send 16 tracks to FOH and 8 to stage with premixed cues for players. The Alesis HD24 looks like a great value. Is it Roadworthy? The Tascam mx-2424 is twice the price, but for our needs (playback only) is it overkill? Then there's the Mackie... All experienced opinions are appreciated. Thanks! |

| I've been using the Fostex (very inexpensive) for live tracking and playback and it has worked flawlessly so far on the road, in flight cases, in studio, etc. It will do what you are looking for without any hiccups. BTW, I have two units, one is for sale Get in touch if you are interested kwonfidelity@hotmail.com |

| hi Rawk, The Alesis HD24 does give a lot of value for the money. Roadworthyness depends (mostly) on the moving parts. The fan and the hard drives are the only moving parts I can think of. I've never opened the case on mine, but I assume the fan is fairly standard. As for hard drives, they seem to be pretty rugged these days. Still, you would want to have a duplicate drive in bay 2 set-up ready to go in case the first one crashed. If you really want to be safe, bring a third duplicate HD pre-mounted in an Alesis caddy (around $20). The OS which Alesis uses seems to be bomb-proof - at least so far.

| Lives for gear | Hi I have a Mackie SDR2496, and despite what many people think (cheap...it's a Mackie...and the likes) it's working totally OK from the first day I got it, and it's almost a year now. It's got analog and digital I/O built in and I have it in my remote recording rig, so I've carried it around a fair bit, since I primarily record on location, and roadworthiness has never been an issue, plus if you ever used an ADAT or any tape recorder it's just like that, really simple, power on and play/record. Whatever recorder you choose get an external hard drive and use that for your audio: have a Lian bay installed in my SDR and have several drives in removable trays that I shuttle back and forth the SDR and my DAW: quick and easy and works like a charm. Hope this helps L.G.
