Question Bass head for acoustic style music...

Hey guys could anybody point me in the right direction. I'm looking for a good bass head to be played through a small 1/15 cab. I've actually been using a small Blues Jr. but and its pretty good but it just lack that sort of low end charm. Its just for recording. I'm looking for that kinda smooth low end a la Jack Johnson style on the In Between Dreams record. Thanks.

You know I had this guy in the studio yesterday with this very nice small AccuGroove cabinet, sounded very clear played both loud and soft, I just can't come up with the name right now of the amp he used with it... I'll post here when I think of it.

Anyway it makes me curious of this new AccuGroove Synergy Amp wich might me a bit of an overkill for your needs . It's definitely worth checking out this brand though.

Look for Walter Woods stuff.

I also like Gallien Krueger's little self contained base amps 1-12 or 1-15, very nice sounding in small rooms or for quieter music styles. I've seen Larry Cohen with Tony Trishka and T Michael Coleman use them in smaller venues with very nice results.

"Opinions vary" Just my thoughts on the subject.

With this in mind I recommend you check out the range of Eden Heads. Maybe a traveler (great buttery low end and good eq). These are some of the best modern amps I have used and combined with their cabs absolutely kill!

Jack Johnson's bass player on the Sleep Through The Static album used a DI (unsure what make) mixed with an Ampeg B15 miced with a 421 - Both signals into UA610s if that helps you.

Good Luck

What was the model of those cool old Ampeg combos with the flip top? B-15N I think? I love those amps for this kinda stuff...

I will also second the Ampeg. They came in several varieties, B15N, B15, B15R, etc. There was also a copy made by Matchless called the, but it is rare as hen's teeth.

Most of the Jack Johnson stuff has been recorded on the small Ampeg B15 series. Another cool little Ampeg amp is the B100R, similar sound to the flip tops in a SS amp. And, they are affordable.

If you are just looking for heads, I will second Walter Woods, but they are expensive and Walter has a pretty long waiting list. It is best to check on the used market.

Another possibility is Ashdown. There are several models that will fit the bill.

Good Luck.

Yeah, I looked into the B15... then I saw the price! I'd love to have one but I just can justify it these days.

I've been tinkering with the splitting signal technique and its been yielding some better results. I've just mixed a little bit of Avalon in with the blues Jr. and its working out so far. It may be a little too rock-ish, I'll see how it sits once everything is tracked. Thanks guys.
