Thread Starter | Hello, Next week I am recording a small classical ensemble (about 17 mixed strings, woodwinds, brass, and percussion, along with choir). Due to certain circumstances, I might be stuck using a pair of AKG TLII's in ORTF near the conductor, supplemented with various other spot mics and ambience mics. I've heard people slam the 414's for orchestral recordings, and was wondering if anyone here has had experience with them used in this way. What can you tell me? Thanks very much, -Ben B |

414 I do not know much about classical recording but guess that it might be because 414s can sound a bit bright..But if you are stuck with them,i am pretty sure you will get decent results..Perhaps a 'warm' pre,eq or careful placement will tame the top..I have seen classical engineers using them and they are top mics... Hopefully someone with direct experience in this field will have some wisdom and tips!!

good question. I did a recording long time ago of a small ensemble when I got my AKG C4000B's. I recorded both in ORTF (card, 110/17 cm) and in AB (omni, 40 cm). Did not like the ORTF result at all, weird image and sound. I thought: Ok, off axis + low budget large membrane is not good for ORTF - but maybe I did something wrong - I dunno. It should work in theory... ![]() All the best - Jon

FWIW, I used a pair of 414B-ULS in blumlein (plus a pair of omni outriggers) to record a large-ish choir last year. Although I'm sure there are technically better fig-8s, I had no complaints about the 414s. I actually recorded some ORTF 4051s as an alternative, and ended up preferring the sound of the Blumlein pair. 90% of it is acoustics of the room and positioning anyway. At least, I think so.

Used TL2's on this gig: Fun recording a massive ensemble (a gig report) for my flanks. I've had numerous folks tell me that they thought the recording was great. Heck, didn't even have exotic preamps- just a Spirit 328 console. Of course, the room and the ensemble were both pretty awesome. --Ben

I use TLIIs for classical on a regular basis. The multiple polar patterns come in handy. (Yes, I know that you're not getting "true" omni or figure-8, but for the kind of remote gigs I do, it's good enough.)

A pair of 414's will do a great job, have no fear.
