I've read on here that the capsules in the 57 and 58 are the same. Maybe that's what you were thinking of?

Smile SM7b has the same capsule as the Beta 57

I was told by a Shure engineer years ago that the SM7B has the capsule as the Beta57. I have not had the chance to listen to both mikes together to confirm this or not.

i believe the SM57/58 and SM7 were both 'based on' the unidyne. but 'based on' is very different from being the same.

SM57 and SM58s have the same capsule but they have a different cartridge that forms part of a very different acoustic environment. so overall while the mics are similar they are not the same.

modern Beta capsules are very different, certainly very different from a beta57a. i couldn't say if they are the same as the original beta57 capsule as ive never opened one. the different environment needed to change the patterns alone would change the sound significantly.

all the revisions use different transformers as well, many of the older ones different have a transformer.
