Talking Saw The Wailin' Jennys live last night...

Wow - what a sound. Their albums sound absolutely stellar and I discovered them when someone on here said their albums were acoustic 'reference' CDs.

They were absolutely unreal live - same amazing sound as the CDs, extraordinary musicianship. They were also very friendly - hung around after the gig to shoot the shit and chat. Phenomenal - catch them if they are playing a date near you!

That's too bad because they were just here a month ago and I was on the fence about going or not. Should have gone the other way it seems.

I agree. One of the best concerts I have ever seen. Small venue and on the second row right in front of them. Just amazing. Spiritual even.

Go Jenny's.

Great band... Probably a good point to bring up an absolutely amazing recording made of them live for the Folk Scenes radio show.

Royer Labs Ribbon Microphones

The sound of this recording is basically the three of them standing around a single SF-24 microphone. The single spot mic figures into the recording very little. This was done by the late engineer Steve Barker.

Those girls sound great even on CBC broadcasts. They can teach the whole gang of singer-songwriters a thing or two about sound, and making music...it's not playing licks and putting on a country grin: it's about making music and playing as a band.

I'd be very surprised if they close-miked their instruments or used those scratchy sounding acoustic guitar pickups.

It is from a radio broadcast and as far as I know, has never been available for sale. A pretty amazing recording, though. Especially considering its simplicity.

Also a Jennys fan here, I posted about them in that Acoustic Reference thread too. Here is the mp3 of the one complete song (that I know of) that Royer made available from that live radio station session a few years ago:

[edited -- see my post below]

That is pretty much how they sound live in concert. One of the singers has changed a couple of times since then, but I think the latest trio is actually the best yet.

'40 Days' is a masterpiece of music and recording. The later 'Firecracker' has great music but I think the recording is a little over the top for their style. Still worth owning for sure.

I am glad we went to see them. Besides just the joy of hearing their music, one reason is because at the time I was considering upgrading our hi-fi sound system... In addition to the fine amplified performances (they toured with their own engineer) they also sang a couple of A cappella pieces. After the concert my wife said "do whatever it takes to get that sound in our house"! So we had fun with that too, ending up with these here at home

Yep, as I said in the other thread, "40 Days" is a reference CD for a small folky ensemble like this, vocals, acoustic guitar, soft drums. An excellent example of a modern digital recording with air, space, stereo image and wonderful balance. Very fine indeed.

I have all the songs from those live sessions that Steve did. They are magnificent performances, complete with mistakes and noises from people bumping into stuff. I don't have permission to share them though. Sorry.

After reading Lynn's post I realized I may have originally heard that Arlington mp3 on his 3DAudio forum.

AFAIK it was available (maybe only briefly) to encourage just what Rob, and I, and probably others, did -- buy the artists' music. Lynn can clarify that if he cares to. But since I do not have specific permission to make it available I will move it and edit my previous post.

Couldn't help myself - I do sound at Freight and Salvage in Berkeley CA and here's a song from their 2007 show I did the live mix on:

They are coming back in July and I hope I get to do their sound again!
