I was about to buy an SM57 to mike my guitar player's cabinet. He told me he already has one which he uses to send to the PA. He told my to save my money and just buy an XLR Y cable and send one line to the PA and the other to my recording rig. After I hung up with him, I thought about it. Surely it would save money, but would doing such a thing discombobulate or weaken the mike signal in some way?? Or is this procedure viable?? Any information greatly appreciated. Thanks!

for splitting monitors and FOH with the same type of console a Y split isnt a problem but when you have a bunch of different gear you need a proper splitter. scroll down the page and there is a thread on it, or do a search.

OK great! So I will need a splitter box for the guitar amp and I am also thinking about grabbing a signal from the drummers internally mounted bass drum mic, so another splitter box there. For the bass rig, I am using an Eden amp which has an XLR direct out built into the back. Would I need a splitter here also or is Y cable ok?? Same goes for the wireless vocal mic, which has an XLR and 1/4" output on the back of the receiver unit. Thanks again for any advice. |

Consider clicking on the splitter tag. There are plenty of threads about splitters and splitting signals. Everyone should have a wye cord in their tech pack or gig bag, but why not consider building one of your own or even better build an N cord... low budget mobile rig How do you properly split a signal?
