Question Wireless from mixer to camera?

Hi All,

It is becoming apparent to me that camera guys hate being "plugged into" (leads get in their way) and directors hate when the camera is not plugged into - more time in post syncing.

Two solutions that spring readily to mind are timecode and wireless technology.

Has anybody got any recommendations for wireless gear to camera? My specific case involves Sound devices 744t.

BTW ive only been doing this for about a year (though im 37 - a late starter - cant work in a shop all my life...) and am scared of timecode! Can anybody tell me as well the normal workflow with timecode. Do we sync recorder and camera at the start of everyday? or do we need to be connected all day?

Any help would be muchly appreciated!

Thanks

Dave

If the mixer is stationary or on a recordists trolley - then the Sennheiser ew 300 IEM G2 is a good option. Mains powered stereo transmitter (can also be powered by external 12V DC) and an IEM pocket receiver.

Use the optional CA 2 to fit the receiver to the camera and the optional CL 500 cable to connect to the camera. This cable will output the stereo unbalanced on a 3-pin XLR, so you will need to make up a Y-adaptor XLR-3F to two XLR-3M or XLR-3F to stereo mini-jack.

Just take care with setting the output level of the receiver so as not to overload the camera - but it's very easy.

If you want mono and portable instead of stereo, you could use the SK 500 G2 and the EK 500 G2.

I hope this helps.

I've had great success with the Lectrosonics units: note - not for the faint of pocketbook...

Lectro just came out with a new Dual system for camera use, the SR. Another solid unit is made by Zaxcom...

It actually depends on your needs, but the best way to do what you are describing here is by getting a Lockit box After setting up the Lockit to the appropriate values you will have to Jam your SD744T (read the Manual) After that you can permanently attach the Lockit to the camera which needs to be enabled to external sync. By using Time Of Day (TOD) timecode the camera can be turned off & on and the Lockit will stay solid. You may have to re-jam your SD744T every 4 hours to avoid TC drift.

Another (cheaper) way to do this is by attaching a BNC cable to the camera's TC out and into your SD744T Timecode input & set your recorder to external sync...

+1 for Lockit boxes. A bunch of these makes life very easy on a production. What's cool for us audio people is it will throw out frame-locked 48kHz word clock as well as TC.

Lockit boxes are only needed and useful if more than one camera is used. For single camera shows they can be more trouble (and money) than help.

Just use your 744 and sync via TC out the camera, voila! Depending on the camera used one should a) re-sync after every shutdown and of course after battery changes.

bonne chance, Karl Lohninger
