Thread Starter | Mic Locker
Just a little advice sought. I currently have the Schoeps CMC64 (2), Schoeps CMC68 (1), DPA 4006 TL (2); I have SD 722 (2) and an SD 788T coming. I am looking for some mics for recording jazz/blues/jump blues/bluegrass and thought that the Shure six mic kit with the 4 SM57's and the 2 SM58's would round me out with some rugged mics good for guitar and drums and maybe vocals.
I do some classical, too. And I am starting to do the Schoeps Double Mid-Side (two Mk3 and one Mk8). I would like to run the DPA's in a concurrent Williams spaced array or Jecklin for this app.
Does any of this make sense? I just saw the "stocking a mic locker for jazz thread" so it prompted this.
Thanks to all who share their knowledge.
Cheers

Well for starters I think you should get some LDCs for the saxophones if you are doing jazz. As I've said in numerous threads, I like the sound of Oktava mics, especially the MKL-2500 for saxophone.
Your idea of buying the Shure kit to get a bunch of 57s/58s might work. I've used a 57 on trumpet well enough, though I prefer ribbons. Even cheaper Chinese ribbons can be a great addition, especially if you are willing to mod them a little. However, the sax might not be too great on dynamics. If you want a dynamic on sax I think the RE20 is supposed to work well.

Well, it looks like maybe I would be better of with a pair of high-end. Jumping from one extreme to the other: DPA 3523 (the 3521 kit with 4023's instead of 4021's) Schoeps has gotten just too high for my wallet.

Having a nice mic locker may be a very cool thing.
With that understood, is it about the mics or their positions that matter the most?

Remoteness, what do you use your SM59s for? I've almost bought a couple a few times, mostly because they look cool and I don't have enough dynamics, but I was just wondering.
Also did you get my PM?

But even though this is a good small collection of mics it is not what I see being mentioned as used for recording jazz or pop. I have gotten some OK jump blues recordings live with ORTF or Williams arrays and the Schoeps. And some OK with a Schoeps MS in close with a DPA for ambiance/spot mic. I just get the impression that there are special mics for jazz. Which perplexes me. A good mic is just that. Granted, some accentuate what you might want and there is the jazz/pop path, but can that not also be done in post?
You are right: where the mic is placed is more important that its size, shape or name. But I am trying to learn, and so much out there is believed as "gospel." What's a tyro to do? |

boojum,
I usually pick the mic for the particular instrument rather than the style of music.
Sometimes that mindset changes a bit, but I seem to use the same mics on a variety of music genres.
Perhaps there are "special" mics for jazz, but I feel it's about how you approach the recording. For me, I like to multi-mic the instruments and get in a lot closer than most folks in this forum. I still feel the fewer the mics the better when it comes to a jazz recording, but I would never consider a single stereo pair when recording jazz. I need a lot more control over what I'm doing in the mix. Options are important to me.
With that said, there are no right or wrong ways to capture a jazz recording, just what works best for the individual recordist.

Also did you get my PM? | I haven't used those mics in a very long time, but when they were in use they were used as ENG or interview mics.
...and, yes I did receive your PM, but I've been seriously slammed.
Can I call you? if so, give me your number or give me a call to discuss it further.
