Question High Quality Headphones -- What do you like best?

I have been looking for some good quality headphones (Beyerdynamic, Sony, AKG) for reference.....Just wanted some opinion before make my decision as I am leaning toward Beyerdynamic.

I have Sennheiser HD650's and I love them. When paired with a quality headphone amp and high quality source material they are very hard to beat. The high end is very clear and defined which makes them extremely good for orchestral/string projects. I would say that they have the flattest response of any reference quality headphones. I love them.

Do you want them for mixing or just listening on?

They are also my Fav. Been using them for coming up 10 years. Great for getting mixes to translate/ hear the REAL low end/ spot distortion

They have a certain consumer kind of schpeel to them, yet, very very very clear. I mean consumer as it, it translates PERFECT. You can tell how it will sound on an IPOD headphone, a computer speaker, etc. But it doesn't sound bad at all, it's comforatable, and did I mention, clear and detailed?

I'm using Sennheiser HD600's, and they are pretty awesome. I've been thinking about upgrading to HD650's. Has anyone tried both? Any thoughts? I've heard the 650's have more bass. Sometimes I feel the 600's are a tad light on bass.

I have a pair of Sennheiser HD-650 headphones which are pretty darn amazing if you drive them with a high quality headphone amp. They ain't cheap and you won't get to hear what they can do unless your headphone amp is audiophile quality.

Here is a link for headphone info and some DIY headphone amp projects:

Have fun.

HD-650s for sure! I LOVE mine. Forget thinking you have to have a quality preamp, they sound amazing through anything...add the quality preamp though...and you'll never want to take them off. I used my old sony headphones the other day (which I used to think were pretty decent) and I hated it. So just a warning, they will spoil you.

Grado Labs 325s. 100% not plastic. I have had my for almost 8 years and they are still like new even with heavy use. They are built tough and sound amazing.

Sennheiser HD600's here. I'm so addicted to these headphones, it's sick. I busted the cable on thursday, and had to order a new one (only 29 bux shipped) but I'm going through withdrawls. I've got AKG K240s and some old Sony's and audio technicas that I bought in Japan, but nothing compares to the sound of the Sennheisers, I really wanna try the 650's but haven't had the chance. They even sound good with my ipod.

I've had the 600's and the 650's. The 600's are warmer, more comfortable and better build quality. The 650's are cleaner. I prefer the 595's to both because they're more powerful and sonically in between the 600's and 650's.

Headphone amps are fine, I've got a Headroom maxed out amp but I haven't used it since I got my Earmax Pro tube amp which just craps all over it for a tenth of the price. The 600's are definitely headphone amp only and the 650's are borderline, but the 595's and 515's will sound phenomenal hooked up to anything. (515's are my traveling hedphones)

I doubt it was heavy use. I had 2 pairs of RS1's that broke in a month, Grados don't handle volume well at all in my experience. Another thing, every single part of Sennheisers is replaceable if you do break them.

Beyer DT 880 Pro. No doubt.

"Germany's Beyerdynamic has offered up a real contender for world's very best dynamic headphone with the DT880."

+1.

DT880s are superb for reference, DT770s or K271S for tracking.

I like AKG 240s for monitoring when tracking, they cut pretty good, though their isolation leaves a little something to be desired.

I like Sennheiser 600s or Sony MDR7509HDs for reference monitoring.

Cool

I use the HD 650 with a Grace m902.

Plus HD 25-1 when I need to listen to detail.

That's because they have no isolation - they are a semi-open-back design. So they're unsuitable for tracking. You would be far better off with the K271S, which is closed and also cuts very well. Purpose built for tracking.

I never could get the hang of MDR7509HDs. Always find them too bright and brittle sounding. YMMV

++1 for AKG K271s for tracking... good isolation, smooth and non-fatiguing, comfortable as heck
