I know I'm comparing apples (stand-alone) and oranges (interface), but at the end of the day one still has to choose. So how would these two compare in terms of sound quality? I suspect that the ULN-2 has a superior analog stage, and it also has greater SNR. On the other hand, the MR-1000 is... 1 bit. Application: Classical piano. Any opinions/experiences? Thanks. |

If you need to produce a quick CD, the ULN is a better solution. If you don't want to mess with a computer while recording, want to push rec and it will always rec, prefer an easier setup, portability, want to work on batteries, etc. go MR1000. |

the ULN-2 is an amazing unit. even if didn't have all the functionality of an audio interface, it would be worth the money just for the mic pre/converter combo. in fact, there are plenty of products that cost just as much as the ULN-2, and that's all they do! the ULN adds firewire, great monitoring/routing options, a headphone amp, and +DSP if you need it. that being said, a lot of people don't trust computers in the field. if you want a standalone recorder with pre's, get a sound devices 7xx. 1-bit ran its course. LPCM wins! |

The ULN2 does battery....it's just a separate battery pack that you have to buy and carry.

Go MR-1000. I also thought that the analog parts probably would be of lower quality. I have an external preamp prepared to use with it but it has created wonderful results as it is. It's portable and easy to operate also and no physical noise coming from it. That can be a problem with laptop solutions. Have not heard the ULN-2 though. I'm just so happy with the MR-1000 ![]() Hans
