Question Soundcraft K2

I found that the previous console at a (church)facility I may recording at is still around. It is the Soundcraft K2. On the FOH, they have a new Yammie digital and retired this board.

Do any of you have experience/opinion with the pre's or EQ on this unit?

My hunch is that I would be fine with the exception of a few "color" channels and would be beyond Small Format A&H - Soundcraft, Onyx or Presonus pres. Am I right?

Thanks in advance for your opinion.
Rob

Robert,

If the K2 is in any kind of reasonable shape, I think the preamps and EQ would easily blow away anything Mackie or A&H have in their repertoire. They are not noise-free preamps (more modern preamps have better S/N and THD specs) but they are of a high build quality and the British EQ is well-designed circuitry.

You should really go thru the desk completely and assess the console in its entirety.

I've mixed (and recorded) on a K2 for the last 3 or 4 years for my church & have owned 2 onyx 1640's of my own that I've recorded with. I also use an 01v96 every once in a while.

If I had to chose between the 3 to record with, the K2 would be the last one I'd want. Not that the Onyx or 01v96 sounds absolutely fantastic, but because the K2 is kinda 'mediocre/blah/foggy/lifeless' sounding..

Don't get me wrong, the K2 audio is useable, it's just not very hard to do better..

Mackie is good in a pinch, but not to rely on especially for recording. You are the first person I heard say this about the ONYX. To each their own, I tell my students everyday that their ears will fall in love with particular equipment. Personally I prefer the A&H ZED 24. The Pre's are clean and bright without being to piercing.

K2: strips/pres ok, esp for the $, not a lot of headroom but usable. EQ ok. Summing not so hot, esp if there are a lot of chan. How old is the console? Did they leave it powered up all the time (for years)? Might need a re-cap. This will be a tough console to get rid of when you get tired of it....esp if it is big/large # of inputs...even for free...
