Question ADAT XT20 vs DA-88 as backup?

I am looking for maybe a tape based backup system to go along with my HD24 and Metric Halo interfaces. Can someone offer some advice? Both units are going pretty cheap right now, but they probably are reaching the age of repair if that is still possible.

ADAT is not repairable. Keep away unless you have old tapes to transfer. Dunno about DA-88s.

I do not think tape is the way to backup. Friend of mine uses Maudio and DP to make backups from the HD24...

I mean backup as in simultaneous recording to several devices. The way I'm thinking is that with a tape system, if something happens the data is already recorded to tape and doesn't disappear forever like a glitch when recording an audio file and losing the entire file.

I understand, but ask some ADAT users about their experiences, and think about buying and striping three tapes per hour and hauling three decks around, and weigh that against the risks of losing files - I'd get a second HD24 (doesn't have to be XR for the backup) and a real good UPS before I'd even think about tape these days!

Tascam DA's are still reapairable through Tascam. It may cost more than you pay for the unit though!!!!!I have had mine for 14 years and they are still going strong.
I have often thought about getting something new but they continue to do the job and I am not interested in going ITB so................

About 2 years ago I replaced our Tascam DA 98/38 48 track back up rig with 48 tracks of HD24 and haven't looked back. When you look at 6 machines working vs 2 machines it was a no brainer for us. The transfers are alot easyer (given you get HDtools for longer shows). We run the Radars with the HD24's reduntantly from a split so if one system fails we still get the show. I still have the Tascam system racked up with the remote just sitting in storage.

Seems like the verdicts are in. Run things the way I have with my Metric Halo 2882's as the main recorders and my HD24 as backup, or vice versa if I am using my 01V96. Maybe get another HD24 in the futrure if anything.

Good back up for HD24 is another HD24. Don't go the tape route, at least don't use MDMs. If you want to use tape as a back up, use a 2" 24 track.

The thought of sycing 3 adats together agin makes me cringe.

Adats are cheap, but so is Mad Dog, and you will not find me drinking it.
