Talking DSD Convertor Quality: Korg MR1000 or Tascam DVRA1000 which is best?

Anyone shot these out against each other? Im talking their own convertors here and only in DSD mode.

Well, I haven't heard the Korg, and I just ordered the Tascam, so I'm curious too. You know which I'm rooting for!

Well I actually own the Tascam and it's a great bit of kit. It obviously has more functionality as a master recorder than the Korg and being able to archive straight to a DVD makes more sense to me than having to transfer to a DAW and burn a disc.

But, I recently had a job were my rack case (including Tascam) was in the hold and it got me thinking about the effect of heavy vibration on an optical drive over time and made me wonder if a machine like the Korg in hand luggage would make more sense. Hence the question!

(BTW, the PS2 keyboard input on the Tascam is one of the many functions that make it a really nice bit of gear to use)

I have just used the Korg, I don't think there will be a big difference. But the Korg is very transportable. I hope Korg make an 8 channel 1 rack unit soon!!!

Really, they both are very close in sound. Like all DSD recorders, pretty much what goes in comes out.
I use the MR1000's for field work and have had the best of luck with them. We do use the Tascam at my buddies studio for a master machine ( along with 2 awesome ATR102's) They both have advantages. I personally prefer the MR1000 ( because it's so darn cute) for field work since it's what I do the most. If I was studio only, I'd buy the Tascam so I could avoid the transfer issue and because you can rack that thing up.

MR 1000 unity gain?

How to calibrate the Korg's line input for live recordings?
Just turn the potentiometers wide open?

I have both and the Korg unit has better onboard DSD converters. I use the Tascam for DSD archiving because I can use the Meitner and DAD converters.
Now.. if only someone could by-pass the Korg A/D and have digital inputs and someone could make a 5.6 editor, I'd be in heaven!

Regards,
Bruce
