Question Vocal tracking for album.. what room?

Hello,

I'm recording/producing an acoutsic-ish album all on location.. mainly in my house, the artist's house, and in various rooms in other places..

Most of the spaces are fine for what we're doing (ac gtr/melodicas/glocks/keys) etc.. BUT..

Where should I track the vox?

I have a good vocal chain (Neumann m269 - vintage Neve 1084 + a valve compressor on it's way)

Should I make a dead area and do it like that? Or find a nice sounding room and do them all there? Something with a longer tail, and less bedroomy.

I'm also keen on recording all the lead vox in omni, as it seems to be the biggest sound.. but I don't want a crappy room to shine through.

Thanks in advance

Why not do a demo in each of several rooms, then compare them? I could see a large dining room/living room with some early reflections sounding really good.

Jim (as always) made a great suggestion, but why not just walk around into each room or space and listen to how the room sounds to your ears.

You could have the singer (or performers for that matter) also involved with this process.
A quick vocal or acoustic GTR performance in each room may work out just fine.
If you must record perhaps a simple handheld recorder will do the trick.

good advice guys.

the singer tends to tire easily, and likes to just get in there..

i guess i'll need to do some tests myself..

There seems to be a trend these days of wanting to record vocals in a small, dead room. I personally don't buy into that. I think that singers, just as horn players, can hear themselves better in a live room. The Beatles vocals sound pretty good in that big room.
That said, try everything!

I've had some good luck with recording vocals in the bathroom, but it depended on the type of sound we were going for.
