closer to calypso IMHO, soca (what defines it I think) is little more than a drum beat, a rhytm, 2/4 timing. The melody can be anything (a la kernal roberts doing Take On Me by Ah Ha or Time after Time by Cindy Lauper), calypso, being influenced by big band and jazz in the 20's 30's 40's 50's and 60's is much closer to jazz music. |
