Traveling With Gear Caused Trouble In Dallas

Interesting news story...someone traveling with a vintage mic created some havoc in Dalls/Ft Worth airport...

Here's the AP Story

Of course, the article didn't mention what KIND of mic, placement, preamp, or conversion grudge

"Get on the floor goddammit!! I've got a microphone and I'm not afraid to use it! Check..1 2"

You know, they called it the "hand grenade" mic, but I'd never thought of actually using it as such.

We were doing a record in LA and Paris this spring.
We had a Soundelux U99 and some other gear in a carryon bag. We got stopped every single time at LAX and Charles de Gaulle. I suppose it looks kind of suspicious on the x-ray.

after a long day of recording interviews w/ a schoeps shotgun mic, i was taking the redeye out of LAX. the screener had me open my bag and pull out the big mic capsule.

"what's this?" she asked.

"it's for the shotgun. (pause) MICROPHONE! the shotgun MICROPHONE!"

i guess she was tired too, she let me through.

from the article:

"used a robot to remove the pipe-shaped object that had wires running through it"

now here is a case where I would pay for the photo

I bought a Shure Level Loc when I was on the west coast about a week ago and I got stopped coming through the airport. I stuck it in with my clothes and checked the bag. Well, I guess they don't really like silver and black boxes in those X-ray machines.

If you're carrying mics onto an airplane take the stand clips off......i got stopped at dulles airport with 2 57's (my only mics at the time) and an mbox because they looked like guns under the xray....it sucked, took me 45 minutes to explain to the 12 people that were searching/interigating me that they were microphones and not guns.
