Talking Opinions on this recording if you please...

I have the oppurtunity to invest in a stronger signal chain.

Over the past couple of years I have tested, deliberated and discounted a number of pres and ADCs as I never felt they offered any particular improvement over my current signal chain.

I would, however, like your opinion my esteemed fellow recordists. Have a listen to this clip recorded with my current setup:

YouSendIt - Send large files - transfer delivery - FTP Replacement

Subjectivity on balance aside, In your opinion would this recording have benefited from a superior pre or adc or should I be putting all funds into more mic choices?

(oh and the balance is to the right as the violinist that you cant hear in this movement is to the left...if that makes any sense...)

In this case, I would say the recording would have gained most from better mic placement and/or hall acoustics - it sounds too distant for my personal taste. I would doubt that a different ADC would have improved much, if anything. A preamp will have more influence, but mics and placement matter so much more. I'd always place higher priority on getting more/better mics than new preamps and AD...

Thanks for your input Daniel, always appreciated.

For me the distance is spot on but then I know you like things a little closer (remembering our Indian recording discussion). Neither is right or wrong.

On the same note, the Violin is more forward in the soundstage, so the piano sounds right to my ears sitting back a but further. I should probably have posted a movement with both instruments playing but got lazy with MP3 conversion / file sharing uploading etc etc.

I agree, of course, about placement and venue being above recording chain in order of importance but that being a given, I am just finding it hard to justify purchasing a better ADC, so its good to get your agreement on that one.

My oppinion

Being extremely knit-picky I would say that this recording could benefit from a richer low end, which could be fulfilled by a different mic, or perhaps closer placement. It also seems to carry a bit of that "digital sound". I thought at first there was a software compressor of some sort, but now I'm thinking maybe it is the audio to digital.

The mics were sub-cardioids, I think all would probably agree that substituting for omnis would have improved the richness, unfortunately I had none available at the time.

Your comment about the 'digital sound' is an interesting one. Could it be the MP3 file or could this be the ADC? If the ADC then that is exactly one good reason to upgrade it. I have gotten very used to the sound of my signal chain and am finding it hard to be objective hence the advice sort.

This is exactly the sort of opinion Im looking for thanks.

Why not look at some omnis?
