I am looking for 16 channels of budget pres for my mobile setup. I am considering focusrite octopre with adat card or presonus digimax fs. Any opinions? Which one should I go for? I'll record anything that comes. Be that pop, rock or traditional music.

I had both at one time but sold the Focusrite in favor of the Presonus. They are both decent sounding units, but the Presonus has pads. That was my only reason for going with the Presonus.

I'll probably get flamed for this but... Mackie ONYX 1640 with Firewire Card. 16 channels straight to computer. I used one for a live DVD tracking session a few weeks ago and it work flawlessly. Sounded pretty damn nice too. Certainly respectable that's for sure. So much so in fact, that I just found a brilliant deal on one myself and bought it! Now I just gotta do the little 'Direct Outs after EQ' Mod and I reckon I have a great little portable rig. Good luck, R.

I have the Octopre with ADAT card. Used it for the majority (if not all) of my recordings on remote along other higher end pres (API, UA, ISA serie Focusrite). It's decent sounding, clean enough to get your source recorded with no issues. It depends a lot on what mics you use, but I took home some great sounding recordings with it, both acoustic and electric. The comps are handy to watch your back from digital overs, and the dual ADAT output allows me to split the signal to primary and backup recorders at the same time. For the money it's a good unit. Be sure to have some space above and beyond, as it gets pretty hot, and the digital board can go nuts in very hot climates (it happened to me a few times, then I started to povide open front to back ventilation in the case). Hope this helps L.G.
