Question Recommend me a live mic to control plosives

I know this is mainly a recording forum but I'm sure there are plenty of people here who have a lot of experience with live performance. Currently I use a Shure Beta Green 5.0 condenser which seemed to be working fine but lately I noticed that every time I say "p" into it it's like somebody fires a cannon through the speakers. Sh!t! It's really loud and disruptive. So... I need a mic that would minimize the plosives. Any suggestions? Thanks.

Did you particularly want a condenser? Stage condensers are pretty pricey for anything that'll do the job better than a 58. Unless anyone has come accross something I haven't. The Heil series (dynamics) are getting good praise here, but I'm sadly yet to try.

What he said.. The Heil PR20 has a great top end with less proximity than others like it. The Beta 58 is also a good candidate, great off axis rejection and a good built in wind screen. Whatever mic you're using, you can always just stick an additional foam sock on, and it's practically plosive proof.

Well, I'm not exactly bent on using a condeser. I kinda feel condensers offer better sound and while they are pricier than dynamics, there's a reason for that. I don't mind paying more if it gives me the performance I need. Naturally I would prefer to pay less however, and if there is a dynamic that performs better than a condenser (my Shure condenser in particular) I will gladly use it.

I will look into Heil, thanks.

You could try beta 57/58. I'd stay clear from Audix OM3's. Haven't tried the rest of the OM series. If you do want a condenser and you've got the cash, the Neumann's sound great. They're a fair few hundred though. I've not seen them used on stage where there's drums/backline involved, but if its acoustic stuff I've not seen anything that's come close.

I did use an Audix OM6 once. I think I liked it although it's hard to tell because the monitoring on the stage was so quiet I couldn't hear myself. (needless to say that was a disastrous show). I've been curious about live Neumanns. I don't want to spend $600-700 on something that will be used only a few times a year but it sure is tempting.

Have you tried adding a foam windscreen and a high pass filter around 80Hz? Much easier than buying a new mic.

I cut 80 Hz on both the preamp and the compressor and that doesn't seem to do much with the BG. I haven't tried a foam screen yet. That's next on the list. But I just might buy a new live mic since the BG was my first mic ever. I bought it when I didn't know anything about microphones. Since then I bought several tube mics for recording but never got around to upgrading my live mic.
