Talking drum mic pack

hey gear enthusiasts-

so i'm thinking of getting a relatively inexpensive drum mic pack
for those remote gigs where there might not be enough decent
mics in the house for decent coverage for recording.

yeah, someday i intend to accumulate a full array of various
mics, but until then, can anyone recommend a decent
pack of mics for drums? Audix and Shure are two
companies that make packs like this.

opinions?

also, does anyone have a problem with the clamp systems
that some of these packs offer? seems like a great idea
to minimize mic stands if i can help it.

thanks a ton,
marty.

As both an engineer and a drummer, I really like the Sennheiser e604's--they're great for toms and snare. I've not used the kick mic' that is available in that series, so no comment there. I like the 604's better than both the AKG and Shure drum-specific mic's. I haven't worked with the Audix mic's...

The e604's are small, but rugged and I really like the clamp mechanism. It's made of a flexible plastic, so you just sort-of snap it in place rather than fiddling with a metal clamp. Also, I feel the clamps allow for much more versatile positioning than the Shure and AKG's. Their size keeps them out of the way which is great from the drummer's perspective (I use them on my very undersized "jungle" kit comfortably) and minimizes inadvertent mic' abuse, which is great on your part.

Those are my thoughts. Best of luck!

Buy once cry once!!
Audix D6 or Shure Beta 52 for kick.
Sennheiser e604, Audix D2, D4, Shure Beta 56 for toms
Shure SM57, Beta 57 Beyer DS201 for snare
Wide variety of condensors for overhead, one type cannot cover all situations.
This is a very short list of some proven, solid mics.
This is just my opinion!

The Audix drums packs are excellent. Most of them have the d6 and i5, which are many people's go to K and SN mics. I got mine without the OH mics because I already had other SCD's that I prefered for OH's. The gooseneck clamps are nice as well, and work and congas and other perc. instruments.

My preferred choices:
Audix D6 on kick
Sen 504/604/904 on snare & toms
matched cardioids on plates- Neumann KM84i/85i, Senn MKH40, AKG 460s, Earthworks SR77 (um, SR30s now I guess)

The Earthworks drum system is great sounding, but the Audix D6 is such a great tone...very inexpensively... and for anything that is live/remote I love-love-love the Sennheissers on toms and snare, the plastic clips are great and the 504 mics sound like old v1 421s to me!!!

Hope this helps-

JvB
