Talking recording open-air festival for dvd

hi slutz

on 6, 7, 8 august i will be recording an open-air electronic festival ASTIGMATIC . it will take place on the beach, on the bank of the vistula river in plock, in poland.

the stage will be mounted on two barges on the water, the sound tower will be about 45 - 50 meters from before the stage (on the ground, fortunatelly ).

i will record all trax from the pa mixer through direct outs into my portable protools rig. of course i need the ambience microphones - and i want to record it in surround.

i think 4 microphones will be enough - on pair on the stage, just behind the line of front speakers, pointing towards the audience. the other pair i thought could be mounted somewhere on the sound tower.

what do you think about it? we are goning to make a surround dvd mix later, so i need to have audience recorded really nice.

how should the second pair of microphones be placed? towards the stage? to the back? to the sides of the tower?

what else do i have to think about before i take all my stuff into the car and go to plock? any help will be appreciated.

i am on holidays right now, sailing on polish lakes, so i can't visit this forum every day, but i will come back here asap to see your responses. thanx in advace - cebolao

it depends how you approach your mix...

will you try to simulate the concert as iff you are "in" the audience?

our as what you hear as FOH?

this makes in my eyes a huge difference...

i always try to get the audience from the "belly".

so i always put some mics left and right pointing in a certain degree towards the audience.

pointing from stage towards the audience is in my humble opinion always a pain in the ass.

but the thing is: there are no rules here.

well. i am sure there are some rules but that's the cool thing about surround. you don't have to follow them!!!

How did the show work out?

This thread made it to the Remote forum a bit late... But, it not to late to find out how it came along.
