I am looking for an 8-channel snake. Size matters. Where would you all suggest I get a small 50' stage snake for location gigs? What's the best value out there? Thanks guys. |

I've found that the folks at Audiopile have quality products at reasonable prices. I don't have any of their stage snakes, but the other cables (including patch snakes) that I've bought from them have been good quality. Audiopile Pro Audio - Snakes |

I will second that EWI makes quality gear. Their road cases are excellent and their cables are very decent too. All at a very reasonable price (unless you have to have a large case shipped across the country).

If you're handy with a soldering iron, all of the stuff you need can be found at Redco Audio. The savings can be significant, and you're guaranteed to get exactly what you want!

I don't know how it is Stateside these days, but ready-made snakes these days are so competitive here that there is little point. My first snake was an 50m 8 way which I made myself fitted to a marcaddy cable drum. These days a similar snake from Studio Spares is about the same cost as the component parts. Bare in mind that the people who put them together are experienced wiremen who spend their days soldering, it will come with a guarantee and will be fully tested, for those reasons alone there is little point in trying to DIY. As for cables, choose good quality belden (or equivalent) Neutrik plugs and sockets, and have it drum mounted. At that length coiling it into a box/flightcase is a pain as against winding it onto a drum which takes less than 2 mins. On Studio Spares website they have a 8 + 4 50m cable on a drum for £182.00 + vat, I would suggest it would take half a day or more to build that unless you are doing it all the time. Good luck whatever you decide. Regards Roland |

Make sure you spend the money to get genuine Neutrik ends. The knockoffs are absolute crap.
