For acoustic guitar and (mostly male) voice(s). Bluegrass, folk, americana, rockabilly, roots. I realize these mics are somewhat different animals. Would be particularly interested to hear from anyone who has both. P.S. I already have the R84 and R92. Thanks.....

BG I haven't heard both, but check this link out: VintageKing.com | AEA Sessions By all accounts, the R44 is the mother of all ribbon mics. But the R88 has gorgeous off-axis response, is very neutral for a ribbon, and of course, you have stereo when you need it. just 2p |

I loved the recordings. Could use a touch more air to my ears. But the smoothness is gorgeous. They did a great job.

Well, I didn't "love" the recordings but thought they sounded pretty good. Especially the electric guitar. I kinda thought the recordings weren't "vibey" enough for the lounge/winebar thing that the singer seems to be going for. I couldn't help thinking that her voice might be better served by a close(r) mic'd condenser of some sort. Maybe this is akin to the comment about the recordings needing more air. (Also, I'm a fan of the AEA TRP, but maybe this music might have benefitted from being run through some tubes). Not sure about the AEA R88 for my voice. My wife's voice sounds fantastic on my R84. My voice sounds pretty good on my R92. I hear the R44 has a very flattering high end that might just do the trick for my voice. I am, however, very turned on by the idea of sticking up a big stereo ribbon mic, with all that coverage, and just playing some music and seeing what happens. Thanks for the link. | |
